  • The 22nd Kite Festival took place Sunday, Apr. 26 at Austintown Township Park from noon to 3 p.m., offering free kites for children, demonstrations by professional kite flyers, bubble stations, face painting, and food trucks, with proceeds benefiting Noah’s Lost Ark Exotic Animal Rescue.  WFMJ
  • On Saturday, Inspiring Minds held its 20th anniversary gala at its Elm Road headquarters in Warren — a community event featuring an eight-course meal served by high school students, scholarship awards from 7 17 Credit Union, and remarks from founder Deryck Toles on youth empowerment.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Residents visited an open house at the former Chill Can facility in Youngstown on Apr. 26 to learn about future plans for the historic site (organizers noted community input will shape upcoming redevelopment).  WFMJ

  • On Sunday afternoon, the Jewish Community Center hosted its 78th Israel Independence Day celebration featuring food, music and games. More than 100 community members enjoyed activities that highlighted Israel’s heritage and culture.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Saturday morning, community members gathered at Davis Family YMCA (Boardman) for the first Step Into the World International Coffee Hour. Organized by Suzanne Gray and her team, the soft launch introduced a new club that will meet monthly or bi-monthly to celebrate diverse cultural traditions across the Mahoning Valley.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mahoning County Career & Technical Center held an open house Saturday in Canfield for adults exploring career change programs such as medical office specialist and welding. The center provides hands-on training, GED help, and free short-term courses, with In Demand Job Week scheduled in May.  The Vindicator
  • OSU Master Gardener Volunteer advises local gardeners on planting spring and summer vegetables once soil temperatures are right. Seeds such as snow peas and radishes can be sown directly if they mature in about 60 days, and gardeners should use a thermometer & ensure proper soil drainage.  The Vindicator
  • YSU held an open house at its renovated Steubenville campus Saturday to preview 19 programs starting Aug. 24 and share plans for long-term growth based on local needs (including $28,000 in scholarships for Jefferson County high schools).  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Transportation closed seven ramps at 10 p.m. Sunday (including the Sillman Street ramp) and shifted southbound traffic onto the northbound lanes at 3 a.m. Monday. These changes will last through late fall as part of a pavement replacement project finishing in summer 2028.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Signs for Kedplasma—a plasma donation center from Kedrion Biopharma—appeared last Sunday at the former Rite Aid on Mahoning and Shenley Avenues in Youngstown. It is unclear when the center will open, so locals can watch for updates.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Poland High School on Saturday, McDonald boys clinched a narrow win in the track meet with a decisive discus throw by Drew Zajack (the defending state champ) that gave them 76 points over Mineral Ridge’s 75, while Salem topped the girls event with 119 points.  The Vindicator
