COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Protesters gathered Sunday outside the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office to demand due process and challenge the jail’s agreement with ICE—organizers, the Mahoning Valley Freedom Fighters, scheduled the ‘Defend Our Neighbors’ protest for 3 to 6 p.m. today.  WKBN
  • On Saturday, Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio organized Youth Market Day at Eastwood Mall where 10 young entrepreneurs showcased products they developed from home or family inspiration—Maddy Gaul earned Best in Show for her confections. A follow-up sale event will be held on Nov. 5 during November Rain.  The Vindicator
  • At a special Shoah Memorial ceremony Sunday at the Jewish Community Center, descendants of Holocaust survivors lit candles and shared memories to honor lives lost in the Holocaust—Rabbi Courtney Berman stressed that sharing survivor stories is key. The event also remembered those killed on Oct. 7 and featured works by Mahoning Valley students—submissions in a contest themed 'Auschwitz: A Place on Earth.'  The Vindicator
  • Last Saturday, Scouts and local volunteers gathered for the 43rd Annual Mill Creek MetroParks cleanup to remove trash from 5,000+ acres of parkland. The event also gave young participants a chance to learn safety skills and care for their community.  The Vindicator
  • This past weekend, Youngstown celebrated its fifth annual May Day Festival at the Calvin Center for the Arts on Mahoning Avenue—families enjoyed a Maypole dance and a memorial ceremony for workers while city leaders noted the event focused on fairness, civil rights, the environment, education, and law. Organizers said they plan to host the next festival next year.  WKBN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Community members gathered Sunday at Springfield Local High School for a spaghetti dinner—supporting a local family after an early March crash killed 15-year-old Jason Daff and his mother, Angela Brown, and left 12-year-old Jayden Daff seriously injured in the hospital.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio held a Youth Market Day this past Saturday at Eastwood Mall—10 young entrepreneurs sold unique products like handmade jewelry and bath bombs. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • About 100 community leaders and activists gathered Sunday afternoon in front of the jail on Fifth Avenue to protest the sheriff’s contract with ICE, which brings an extra $4.5 million annually and 95 to 100 additional detainees to the local lockup+ officials are urged to ensure proper representation and due process for immigrants. Protesters chanted for constitutional rights+ including fair hearings and protection from unjust deportations.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Vienna fire officials explained that the new 3.5 mill levy is aimed at replacing older 1-mill levies and will raise the cost by about $77 per year for a $100,000 home to fund part-time EMS staff and equipment maintenance—officials held a public session in March and will meet again at 1 p.m. May 3 to discuss further details as the township prepares for the May 6 primary election.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Local football players from Mahoning Valley became undrafted free agents after the NFL Draft wrapped up in Green Bay Saturday. Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams signed with the Carolina Panthers while Youngstown State’s Jaison Williams and former Chaney standout Redd Douglas joined the New York Giants—each player now hoping to launch their NFL career.  WFMJ
