- ➤ Poland Elementary students led by teacher Samantha Alexee raised nearly $25K in a math-a-thon to support St. Jude, surpassing their $20K goal with pledges collected over the past month. The fundraiser ends today at Poland McKinley (donations cover treatment and family support). WFMJ
- ➤ The Youngstown Foundation awarded nearly $500K in grants to local nonprofits, including a $100K award to the Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley for a new downtown office at 241 W. Federal St. & a $25K award to the Mahoning County Land Bank for affordable housing improvements. The Vindicator

- ➤ Roemer Industries unveiled two new state-of-the-art chemical etching machines on Monday morning (purchased from Chemcut Corporation) to replace equipment over 50 years old. - ➤ The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and Youngstown Columbiana Association of REALTORS will host a symposium on May 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Youngstown Country Club — experts will discuss how housing shortages affect local economic growth and employer hiring amid rising property values. - ➤ Megan Conti—a teacher at Youngstown City School District—received a $250 gift card from the Ohio Lottery’s Science of Reading Awards. The award honors her dedication to building strong readers after meeting the Science of Reading requirements. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown commuters face ramp closures on I-680 today as seven ramps closed at 10 p.m. Sunday, with detour signs directing drivers until fall 2026 and summer 2027 (another ramp closes Wednesday). Construction crews moved traffic onto northbound lanes Monday to start a pavement replacement project finishing summer 2028. WFMJ
- ➤ Howland firefighters will use a $5K grant from the Fueling Futures program (sponsored by Enbridge Gas Ohio) to buy two new Sensit Gold multi-gas meters. The new devices will help detect carbon monoxide and keep residents safe. WFMJ

- ➤ At Valley Panera Bread locations, a cookie sale fundraiser will support mental and behavioral health services from May 4–10—each Chocolate Chipper cookie purchased will donate $1 to fund a new community education coordinator at Akron Children’s. WFMJ

- ➤ Vinny Mauri, a Howland graduate, won his first marathon on Monday, Apr. 27 finishing in 2:05:54 and beating the previous world record by 15 minutes — a historic win for the community. WFMJ
- ➤ YSU women’s tennis is set for the NCAA tournament after a strong season + the team will compete in upcoming matches announced by the university. Games are scheduled over the coming weeks at local venues. WFMJ
- ➤ At the 30th Poland Invitational Saturday at Poland High School, McDonald boys (Blue Devils) won by one point with standout efforts from Drew Zajack in the discus and Joey Cappuzzello in the 1600, while Salem clinched the girls side led by MVP Naomi Sheesley.
