COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Poland firefighter comforted a family’s dog Tuesday morning while crews fought a structure fire in Poland. She took the dog for a short walk to keep it calm during the emergency.  WFMJ
  • Goodwill will open a new location on Aug. 1 at the CHCDC on Struthers Coitsville Road in Campbell, featuring an indoor thrift store and outdoor donation center. The partnership with Campbell City Schools will give students hands-on retail experience.  WFMJ
  • Village officials plan to add a family-friendly disc golf course with 10 baskets to Woodland Park this summer using a semi-permanent lease. Council members may consider a full-scale course in the future as work could align with the fall Oktoberfest.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will stop in Struthers on Sunday, July 12 at 11:30 a.m. east of South Bridge Street. The tour, part of America’s 250 anniversary celebrations, will continue to other public stops in the region.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In 2025, the city-owned Covelli Centre + Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre + Wean Park lost $484,728 after 16 years of profit because fewer big shows were held, but Eric Ryan said strong 2026 events including sellouts and a rescheduled Disney on Ice could drive a financial turnaround.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from McKinley Jr./Sr. High School launched the Trojan Coffee Cart this spring to earn an 'Ohio Means Jobs' seal by serving daily coffee orders to staff until the end of May. The project gives students hands-on experience in customer service + inventory management.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown State University President Bill Johnson appeared on 21 News Midday on Wednesday discussing campus updates, including about 1,600 spring graduates, a successful Steubenville open house that received over 80 applications in one day, and recent athletic achievements.  WFMJ
  • Enbridge Gas Ohio awarded a $10K grant to OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children's Center for Science and Technology Tuesday to support its annual Silly Science Sunday festival that brings free STEM activities to families in Mahoning Valley and expects to serve over 3,000 guests.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Public Library board approved relocating the Poland branch after a special meeting Wednesday evening at the Main Library (305 Wick Ave). The move comes after cost estimates showed long-term maintenance is lower for a new building, despite opposition from local residents and Poland Village Council.  WFMJ
  • Bob Durbin, Mahoning County deputy engineer, was named Project Manager of the Year by the National Association of County Engineers after managing over $50M in road and bridge projects that improved travel across the county. He led key projects including a major road expansion.  WFMJ
  • Trumbull County commissioners approved sending a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation supporting a funding bid for Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport’s plan to launch a new airline service; county tours reinforced the need for updated airport facilities to boost regional growth.  Tribune Chronicle
  • A section of Walker Mill Road from Burgess Run Road to Bishop Woods Court closed Wednesday for a culvert replacement project; officials advised drivers to detour along North Lima Road, Western Reserve Road, and South Avenue, and work will finish Friday.  WFMJ
