COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A tree fell onto the Columbiana County animal shelter's roof Saturday morning, causing extensive damage to both the upper and lower levels (no dogs were injured). The shelter is repairing the damage with help from Warbucks Excavating in Salem and local supporters from Compassionate Paws Foundation.  WFMJ
  • Bruce Brungard from Gardeners of Greater Youngstown is showing off hanging baskets and promoting a spring plant sale. More details on the sale will be shared soon.  WFMJ
  • The WE OUTSIDE! market at McGuffey Centre on Saturday moved vendors and shoppers indoors after rain disrupted the planned outdoor setting. The Intentional Development Group will host the next market on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (attendance is free).  WFMJ
  • Families explored downtown Youngstown using YoPass, a pilot program by the Economic Action Group that launched Saturday morning at the McDonough Museum of Art. The program features scavenger hunts at 14 local sites and offers exclusive restaurant deals, with the pilot running until the end of October.  WFMJ
  • Volunteers will meet on May 9 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Niles Greenway Central Park Trailhead on East Church Street to continue cleanup efforts that help revitalize downtown Niles after last Saturday's work in rainy weather.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Vault of Vendors Gift Shop in Warren now hosts more than 25 women-owned local businesses, giving small business owners a storefront to sell and receive proceeds directly. The boutique shop will open on weekends (May 5-6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the opening weekend and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. regularly).  WFMJ
  • Coaches Burger Bar in Austintown introduced its May menu on May 2, featuring burgers, wings, pizza and a special milkshake of the month. Melissa DelSignore highlighted the fresh offerings for diners in the area.  WFMJ
  • Coaches Burger Bar prepares for the Kentucky Derby by offering a special buffet+drinks menu and unique derby deals. Melissa DelSignore announced the festive specials set to begin soon at the local venue.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Mahoning County judge gave SOBE Thermal Energy Systems an extra 60 days to pay over $55,000 in fees owed to its former receiver+ the order came as the downtown heating plant faced financial hardship and nearly 30 buildings depended on its steam heat.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Moosally Medical’s Pickleball Tournament will take place at Packard Park in Warren on Aug. 15 and 16. Registration is open now until Aug. 8 with early rates of $35 until July 1, and there will be games for different skill levels plus prizes, lunch, and raffle tickets for Packard Park.  WFMJ
