COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community partners including the RESPECT Foundation, the City of Youngstown, CIRV, the police department and the YMCA will hold a press conference this morning to share updates on the RESPECT Basketball League. The league will tip off on June 8 and honor founder William —Shimmie— Miller, who died last year after being shot in a car.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were taken to the hospital after a three-car crash on Sunday night at the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and Superior Street in Youngstown—wet roads contributed to the accident.  WYTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Animal Charity of Ohio warns supporters about a text message scam—texts ask for donations through a fake Venmo account and instruct recipients to report the messages to Venmo and the Federal Trade Commission.  WYTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is asking the Youngstown Board of Control to approve plans to restore the old IBM Building at 250 East Federal Street. The project includes repairing windows and masonry while matching original materials — the board will review the proposal Tuesday.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown Playhouse will soon open a new venue downtown that seats about 175 people—this space will allow the theater to host smaller productions that their main hall cannot fit. The playhouse secured the space in the Western Reserve Ballet building on West Boardman Street through a rent-free agreement with its partner.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kimberly-Clark announced on Thursday its five-year, $2 billion plan that includes building an $800 million advanced manufacturing facility at the former RG Steel property in Howland and Warren townships—local leaders credited the collaboration among government and economic groups for securing the project and boosting the Valley's prospects for future growth.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kilcawley Center closed today as renovations began in its first phase—areas including Cove Snack and Chill, KC Food Court, Dunkin', Jamba Juice, Pete's Treats, Wendy's, and meeting spaces will be closed until May 11 while key dining areas stay open or move temporarily. The renovations will continue in phases and are scheduled to finish in Fall 2027.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ODOT announced five road projects will affect highways in Mahoning County this week, with lane restrictions and detours on I-680 for bridge repairs and noise wall installation, a bridge replacement on U.S. Route 224 in Canfield, resurfacing on state routes 14 and 165 plus pavement reconstruction on state route 170. The work is weather permitting with completion expected by mid June for I-680 repairs, September for the noise wall, fall 2026 for the bridge replacement, and late October for resurfacing and reconstruction.  The Vindicator

  • A women's bocce tournament took place on Sunday at Lorenzinos with 13 teams competing from local and out-of-town areas. Organizers Carmelina Iamurri and Diane Sigurani said they plan to make the event annual to welcome more female players.  WYTV
