COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Attorney Dave Betras offered free legal advice on noise complaints and child support in his second segment posted yesterday. He answered questions submitted by local residents, helping them address legal concerns.  WFMJ
  • The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is holding its final mass at St. Brendan Church today at 5 p.m. (2800 Oakwood Ave) as part of a merger plan to address rising costs.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In Howland, a house fire on Sunday morning left a family of four homeless after flames spread in a basement living room; firefighters stopped the blaze within 15 minutes and no one was injured while the state fire marshal investigates the cause and the Red Cross assists with shelter.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Main Street Bank reported a 33% net income increase from $3.6 million last year to $4.8 million this quarter and will soon open a full-service branch at 3667 Starr Centre in Canfield.  WFMJ
  • WRTA is accepting nominations for its 5th Annual Small Business Awards—small businesses in the Mahoning Valley can enter by Thursday, May 14 for a chance to win a six-month marketing campaign and a $1,000 cash prize. Winners will be honored at the B&O Station Banquet Hall.  WFMJ
  • Downtown Youngstown restaurant West 34, located at (34 West Federal Street), appears permanently closed. The city said it was informed of the closure while the manager and owners have not commented on the reasons.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lutz Greenhouse has announced a fundraiser (for the Jason Swiger Memorial Scholarship) to award scholarships to two high school students; Gwen Swiger shared details (on the scholarship program) during a press release.  WFMJ
  • Howland Township woman Catherine Gajski graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy (in Annapolis) with a degree in weapons, robotics and controls engineering and was commissioned as an ensign; she must serve at least five years as a commissioned officer.  WFMJ
  • Olivia Jackson graduated from YSU with a bachelor's in exercise science + her mother Jennifer Jackson earned an MBA focusing on organizational leadership over the weekend, marking a shared milestone in education for both.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio shoppers can buy school clothes and supplies without sales tax from 12:00 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9; the break applies only to items meeting state price limits to help families prepare for the school year.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Southwoods Health invested over $1 million in a new spine surgery technology designed to help patients recover faster. President Steve Davenport said the tool will be used in upcoming procedures to improve surgical outcomes.  WFMJ
  • After backlash from providers, CareSource paused its plan to clawback overpayments from behavioral health providers and will correct payments to 85% of the Medicaid fee schedule. Providers—including Knapp Center for Childhood Development in Poland—warn patients they may need to switch plans if care access is affected.  WFMJ
