COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The International Firewood Expo will be held at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds in Cortland on June 5 and June 6. Hosted by Ohio Wood Burner Ltd., the two-day event will feature live demonstrations and showcases for firewood and forestry tools. WFMJ
- ➤ Animal Charity of Ohio rescued 21 cats from a home on Park Avenue on Tuesday, May 5 and returned today to check for any remaining animals. Board President Jenny Falvey said the overwhelmed owner will not face criminal charges while the charity works to spay and neuter the cats. WFMJ
- ➤ A local group will host community forums to discuss ideas for change at various venues around town. The events are planned for the coming weeks, and residents can join to share their views. WFMJ
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Roosevelt Park in Campbell announced its Music in the Park concert series starting June 4 and continuing every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. until Sept. 17, with no concert on Aug. 27 due to Campbell City Fest. WFMJ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ National Skilled Trades Day was observed yesterday after City Machine Technologies, Inc. established the holiday to honor jobs like construction, welding, and mechanics and to encourage local students to learn useful skills in Youngstown (the event has been held on the first Wednesday of May since 2019). WFMJ
- ➤ Sister Mary McCormick will serve as Interim President at Ursuline High starting July 1 after Reverend Murphy’s retirement was announced in mid-May — the Austintown native and Ursuline alum brings extensive academic credentials to guide the school through its transition. WFMJ
- ➤ Between July 2024 and August 2025, Lakeview Local School District spent over $150,000 on treasurer roles. Ryan Stowell, hired as deputy assistant treasurer despite saying he lacked qualifications, left to become Liberty Elementary principal while the board said it is pleased with its new treasurer. WFMJ
- ➤ Austintown Local Schools will distribute lunch boxes to teachers using a grant-funded food truck on Friday, May 8 to show appreciation — the truck features the school's falcon mascot and will include a new course in food truck business and culinary management for high school students. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On May 5, voters approved public library levies with an 85.7% margin, as reported by the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library. Twelve of fourteen levies passed statewide, promising continued support for essential library services. WFMJ
- ➤ Nearly 100 cruisers took part in a memorial caravan in Columbus on Wednesday to honor Trooper Nicholas Cayton—a Canfield officer killed last October in a fatal crash—with his name read for addition to state and national memorials. WFMJ

- ➤ Local health officials reported hantavirus concerns on May 6 and urged residents to avoid contact with rodents in the area (official guidelines are forthcoming). WFMJ
