COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Matt Stone and Marshawn Peyko (of the National Association of Letter Carriers) discussed plans for the Stamp Out Hunger event scheduled for this Saturday.  WFMJ
  • Guy Burney of CIRV and Mayor McDowell finalized Wednesday’s plans for the HOPE Conference on May 14 at the Covelli Centre—an all-day event that will offer resources such as food vouchers, health care, job training, and legal aid to Youngstown residents.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Selah Dessert Theater presents Eleemosynary, a play about three generations of women, starting May 14 with seven performances including schedule changes in the final week at the theater above Selah Restaurant in Struthers—tickets cost $19.50.  The Vindicator
  • Mark Dawidziak will present a program on Edgar Allan Poe, exploring his mysterious death and misconceptions at the McGuffey Society’s Memories of a Lifetime event. It starts at 10 a.m. on May 16 in the Denny's meeting room (4020 Belmont Ave.) with admission at $10 for members, $15 for others.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Local officials announced a fireworks display will return (after nearly 10 years) in Youngstown, with more details on the event’s schedule and location to be released soon.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PIA’s Youngstown campus in Vienna Township received a King Air KA-350ER at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 to enhance aviation training, giving students hands-on experience with a turbine-powered aircraft (formerly used by the Air Force).  WFMJ
  • Junior Achievement is hosting a work skills workshop in Youngstown to teach participants practical job preparation techniques and boost career readiness. The event is part of the nonprofit's ongoing efforts to enhance local employment skills.  WFMJ
  • The American Association of University Women hosted a program Tuesday in Boardman to bridge classroom lessons with career readiness. Speakers Traci Hostetler (Educational Service Center) and Michele Merkel (Junior Achievement) highlighted how hands-on learning connects local education with real-world opportunities.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 100 cruisers led a memorial caravan from New Albany to Columbus Wednesday as officials honored Trooper Nicholas Cayton, killed last October, and other fallen officers. On Thursday, their names were engraved on the Ohio Peace Officers Memorial Wall (844 names total) at the training academy.  WFMJ
  • The Trumbull County Planning Commission recognized Judge Cynthia Westcott and the Women’s Therapeutic Docket as April’s 'Something Good' Initiative recipients for Mental Health Awareness Month in Warren. The program has helped women in the criminal justice system receive structured treatment and accountability — supporting their recovery and rebuilding their lives.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Youngstown Phantoms selected 31 players in the USHL Draft and tender signed forward Lukas Zajic as they build their roster for the upcoming season. Fans will see the new team at a camp to be announced soon.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Youngstown State dropped a 2-0 loss to Green Bay in the Horizon League tournament opener at YSU Softball Complex on Thursday. The loss sends the Penguins into the elimination bracket and they will face Robert Morris at 11 a.m. Friday.  Tribune Chronicle
