CRIME NEWS

  • A Niles man—Nazzarion Battee-Diggs, 25—was indicted on drug charges including possession with intent to distribute cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine; his indictment was unsealed Friday following his April 16 arrest and he is now held in Mahoning County jail awaiting arraignment later Friday.  WYTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Youngstown City School District will merge Chaney and East high schools into one central school in the 2026-27 school year — the new school will operate at the current East High building on the East Side and include a consolidation of middle schools while addressing transportation issues through upcoming public meetings.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mahoning Avenue will be paved between Meridian Road and Interstate 680 starting Monday, and drivers should expect delays and lane restrictions—detours will be posted while work is set to finish by June.  WKBN
  • Representative Lauren McNally visited Hubbard High School on Friday to talk with juniors in American History about the legislative process. She also explained the importance of public service at a young age.  WYTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • USDA Wildlife Services and local health departments will drop about 744,300 oral rabies vaccine baits from small planes and helicopters between May 12—24 to vaccinate wild animals such as raccoons. Residents in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will see low-flying aircraft while vehicles distribute baits in Hubbard, Salem, Warren and Youngstown, and officials advise leaving the baits undisturbed to prevent minor pet illness.  WKBN
  • Southwoods Health Surgical Hospital earned national accreditation under the MBSAQIP—making it the only accredited bariatric surgery program in Mahoning County—and is expanding its bariatric care team with Dr. Joseph Martin joining Dr. Brandon Dessecker.  WFMJ
