- ➤ Volunteers placed about 100 flags on veterans' graves at Lake Park Cemetery in Boardman on Saturday morning in preparation for Memorial Day. They appreciate seeing younger helpers learn about veteran history (John Brown from AMVETS said that caring for these memorials keeps the sacrifice of veterans alive), and the flags will remain until Veterans Day. - ➤ Youngstown Fire Department responded to a fire at a home on Bon Air Avenue around 9 a.m. today and took one person to a hospital—cause of the fire is under investigation. WFMJ
- ➤ Fire crews from Boardman, Austintown—and Green Township battled heavy smoke at Life Storage on Boardman-Canfield Road after a fire started in the back of a storage unit, with local teams arriving 34 minutes ago. WFMJ
- ➤ Firefighters from several Mahoning County departments responded to a fire at ExtraSpace Storage on Route 224 in Boardman yesterday around 1 p.m. when smoke was seen coming from the back of one building. WKBN
- ➤ A motorcyclist suffered critical injuries in a crash on State Route 7 in Beaver Township Saturday morning at about 9:40 a.m.—his motorcycle hit a pickup truck turning into a driveway and was then struck by another car before he was airlifted to hospital. WYTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Next week, Mahoning County communities including Youngstown will face road closures and lane restrictions as paving on Mahoning Avenue begins Monday and ends by the end of June. Buckeye Circle will be closed Monday from 8 a.m. for a dead tree removal program, Ellsworth Road is off-limits May 13—May 21 for culvert replacement, and Southeast River Road will see closures May 14—May 15 during work hours for tree removal. - ➤ Warren G. Harding won 15-10 on Friday at the Fields of Dreams in Boardman—scoring nine runs in the fifth inning and stopping a late rally—while Cardinal Mooney will face Liberty in its sectional final later this week. The Vindicator
- ➤ On May 9, local high school sports produced multiple wins (softball, baseball and boys tennis) as Poland beat Hubbard 10-6 in softball, Niles won 23-12 over Lordstown on its new turf field, and Cardinal Mooney won 5-0 in tennis. Other schools (Mathews, Archbishop Hoban, Crestview, Champion, Canfield, Fitch, Garfield, Warren JFK and Bristol) also posted wins in a busy day for local athletics. The Vindicator
