COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Business students at YSU awarded a $2,000 grant to Clothed in Strength (a nonprofit aiding single mothers with essential services) through the Pay it Forward Student Philanthropy Initiative after months of reviewing community needs.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation is hosting a public open house today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Jaylex Center (2110 Glenwood Ave) to review the Greater Glenwood Plan, which will guide improvements for several South Side neighborhoods.  WFMJ
  • Saints Peter & Paul Church on Covington Street in Youngstown will host its final mass at 6 p.m. on June 29 before the building is repurposed for nonworship use amid a decline in parish membership.  WFMJ
  • The 4th annual Big Birding Weekend runs May 15 to 17 at Mosquito Lake State Park in Cortland — offering guided bird hikes, film screening, a live raptor program and a bird social at Country Porch Winery. Free drop-ins are available while select activities need registration due to limited capacity.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown State University honored Dr. Robert Ricchiuti and Phyllis Ricchiuti Saturday during its Notable Giving Society Celebration for their philanthropy and leadership. The couple founded the Rich Center for Autism and donated over $3.2 million to support children and community programs.  The Vindicator
  • Healthy Community Partnership and partners will launch Move the Valley, a new series of walks and bike rides at the Downtown Farmers Market, replacing Walk Wednesdays. Walkers meet at the main Library at 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays with kickoff ride at 5 p.m. for Bike Month.  The Vindicator
  • The Second Harvest Canstruction event at Eastwood Mall had local teams build food-can sculptures on Saturday, May 9; winners for best meal, best use of labels and best original design were named, while community members can vote for a People’s Choice Award at the service desk until June 12.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • County singer Niko Moon heads his Back to My Roots tour at Foundation Amphitheatre on Sept. 11. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at Covelli Centre’s Southwoods Health box office and Ticketmaster, with an online presale from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday using password FISHIN.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local students from Choffin Career and Technical Center represented the Valley in a statewide culinary contest in Columbus on May 8 by creating an original dish called 'Defenders Power Lunch.' The dish will join the district menu next school year as part of the center’s culinary program.  WFMJ
  • Utica Shale Academy in Salineville received a $50,000 award from the Future Forward Schools program for aiding under-resourced students. Superintendent William Watson said the funds will expand a new mechanics program and upgrade school vehicles.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Overnight delays on Boardman-Canfield Road will continue with 15 minute stops for bridge work on U.S. Route 224 from tonight until Wednesday, May 13. Crews will install 15 beams as part of a $10 million project to replace the bridge that is over 70 years old.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allegheny Health Network has unveiled a new $55M Airbus H145 D3 for its LifeFlight fleet upgrade. The helicopter will begin service in late May (serving areas including southeastern OH, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland) and is among the nation’s most advanced air ambulances.  WFMJ

  • The Sole to City half-marathon will run later this month in Youngstown, starting at Second Sole & ending downtown at Penguin City.  WFMJ
