- ➤ Darlene Jones (CEO of St. Vincent de Paul Society, Northeast Ohio District Council) was honored with the 2025 ATHENA Award Thursday night in Canfield for her work expanding a Catholic charity that now serves nearly 9,500 people and nearly $2 million in annual funds. She led the organization to increase meals served from 30,000 to 118,000 and now plans to build a community resource center to help reduce food insecurity and support job skills. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ The Baby Bargain Boutique returns this Saturday at Boardman Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with over 100 moms selling gently used baby and kids items at low prices, and admission is free if you donate a nonperishable food item to a local pantry—ensuring the event runs rain or shine. WYTV
- ➤ The 44th Annual Hall of Fame Fire Awards took place Wednesday in Columbus and recognized 22 firefighters statewide + three from Youngstown for their bravery during the Realty building explosion last May. - ➤ On Saturday, May 24, the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will open its outdoor Logan Campus on Logan Way—offering swimming, sand volleyball, tennis, pickleball, basketball, an aquatic climbing wall and a snack shack. - ➤ A Warren man, 43-year-old Joseph Pizzulo—who pleaded guilty to collecting phony signatures on a ballot petition for a city impound lot—failed to appear for his 9 a.m. sentencing at Trumbull County Common Pleas Court and now faces an arrest warrant. WFMJ
- ➤ Two defendants accused of running a human trafficking ring out of local massage parlors in Warren appeared in court on Thursday; Suk Hui Starr (64 from Fort Worth) and Tae Suk Hwang (62 from Saginaw) pleaded not guilty to charges of corrupt activity, money laundering and promoting prostitution, had bond set at $50,000 with their passports surrendered, and face a pretrial on June 5. - ➤ On Monday, the LaBrae Board of Education met and approved graduation plans by setting May 23 for 82 seniors at Packard Music Hall and May 30 as the last day for others. The board renewed a cafeteria contract with the Nutrition Group, hired new staff, recognized freshman Mars Bustard for winning a contest, and approved a public hearing for June 4 in the complex auditorium — moves that guide the district's next steps. - ➤ The Ohio Department of Agriculture expanded its quarantine for the spotted lanternfly on May 15 to include Wood, Seneca, Summit, Portage, and Carroll counties—joining Mahoning and Trumbull counties—and restricting the shipment of trees and nursery stock without inspection to slow the insect’s spread.
