  • The Valley will observe Memorial Day on May 26 with numerous parades, ceremonies and races scheduled to honor veterans; staging in Austintown begins at 9 a.m. and events will also take place in Beaver Township, Boardman, Canfield, Youngstown and several Trumbull County communities — a day planned to remember those who served.  The Vindicator
  • The Wean Foundation will host a 30-minute Race, Equity and Inclusion workshop Tuesday at 10 a.m. on Zoom to explain racism in its institutional forms. Other community events include a sound bath at Unity Spiritual Centre in Liberty Wednesday at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30, a Poland Historical Society meeting at the Little Red School House Wednesday at 6:30, a teen glow in the dark art session at Girard Free Library Thursday at 5:30, a 57th annual Shenango Valley Urban League banquet May 28 at Avalon at Buhl Park, and a new St. Vincent de Paul dining hall location at Broadway Community Campus in Youngstown.  The Vindicator
  • More than 100 couples renewed their wedding vows at St. Columba Cathedral on Sunday in an annual Mass held by the Diocese of Youngstown. Bishop David Bonnar stressed the need for mutual support — guiding couples from 25 to 67 years of marriage to cherish their life-long bond.  The Vindicator

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a south side incident when at least sixty shots were fired overnight with officers arriving at Zedaker Street and Cambridge Avenue—just west of Pemberton Park—around 2:40 a.m., collecting sixty shell casings with no victims or damage noted.  WFMJ
  • Trumbull County Grand Jury is reviewing evidence from a fatal single-vehicle crash in Bazetta Township on November 3, where 35-year-old Britni Ulam recorded a blood alcohol level of .339—over four times the legal limit—and lost control of her Nissan SUV on State Route 46, resulting in the death of 31-year-old Frank Walter, with the jury set to decide if aggravated vehicular homicide charges should be brought.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Musicians and former students gathered at Stambaugh Auditorium on Sunday to honor Stephen L. Gage, who taught at Youngstown State University for 28 years. The nearly two-hour concert featured 88 musicians and seven conductors with a world premiere piece commissioned in his honor (Mission: LoveMusic plans future tribute concerts).  Tribune Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bird watchers will gather at Mosquito Lake State Park for the third annual Big Birding weekend from Friday through Sunday on Memorial Day weekend—organizers plan guided hikes, keynotes at Champion High School, wildlife talks, displays, food trucks, and a road closure on Hoagland Blackstub Road with a detour in place.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emergency crews from several fire departments and dive teams practiced water rescue techniques on Sunday at Lake Milton State Park in a large water rescue drill designed to simulate a callout ahead of Memorial Day—coordinated by the Portage County Water Rescue Team to improve response efforts in busy summer conditions.  WFMJ
  • Aimee Fifarek, director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, testified before the Ohio Senate Education Committee last week to defend local library funding and the Public Library Fund—essential for nearly half the library’s budget—and urged senators to maintain current funding as the state budget deadline on June 30 approaches.  The Vindicator
