COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kisling, Nestico & Redick has launched the Nanye Barber Tribute Fund to offer free swim lessons to Ohio children through 10 swim schools. Applications are open until May 22 — families can apply online to learn water safety after the tragic drowning of 15-year-old Nanye Barber.  WFMJ
  • Sons of the American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 will host two Memorial Day ceremonies in Poland to honor veterans. The processional begins at Riverside Cemetery Saturday, May 23 at 9 a.m.—community members meet at 8:55 a.m.—and the Four Chaplains Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 25 at 9:15 a.m.  WFMJ
  • Dylan's House held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, May 19 at its newest home at 548 Judith Lane in Struthers. The nonprofit built the home to help adults with autism live independently.  WFMJ
  • Memorial Day events take place from May 23 to May 25 across the Valley, featuring parades in Boardman and Columbiana, services at Green Haven and Cortland, and a museum open house in Mercer County. Community members can join tributes honoring veterans and celebrating the holiday’s historic roots.  WFMJ
  • Second Harvest Food Bank in the Mahoning Valley will receive $25,000 from Meijer as part of a $200,000 donation to four local food banks (Harvest For Hunger campaign). The donation helps food pantries meet increased demand.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Graphite One canceled its multibillion dollar graphite facility plan in Weathersfield Township after ending its lease on a 220 acre site and chose to develop property in Conneaut — a location with direct Lake Erie shipping and rail connectivity that supports regional investment.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Boardman High School students jammed with Zac Brown Band members Daniel De Los Reyes and Chris Fryar on Tuesday, and today the band will join the students at Salem Music Center for a student recital featuring Operation Six-String graduates.  WFMJ
  • The LaBrae Local School District corrected a procurement error when it failed to send required documentation to the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce before spending $62,545 on special ed busing. Superintendent AJ Calderone said the funds were used as intended, and the proper paperwork has been submitted.  WFMJ
  • The Cafaro Foundation awarded a $100K grant to Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio to fund a 16,000 sqft educational center at Eastwood Mall. The center, named JA Discovery Center — offering JA BizTown and JA Finance Park programs, will serve 10,000 students annually in learning financial skills.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ODOT maintenance on I-76 eastbound near the Ohio Turnpike in North Jackson has closed the left lane + kept the right lane open, so drivers should plan for delays.  WFMJ
  • City Council votes tonight on a plan to remove three low-head dams on the Mahoning River to improve water quality and restore natural habitats — the project, budgeted at $6.125 million with up to $200,000 for land access, is set to start construction by mid-2027.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gloria’s Garden Home Care opened its doors Tuesday afternoon at 15 Colonial Drive to offer homemaker, personal care, and respite services for individuals with developmental disabilities across Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Founder Jaylen Williams said the faith-based agency accepts Medicaid and charges $35 an hour for private billing.  WFMJ
  • Gloria’s Garden Home Care opened to the public yesterday in Youngstown + now accepts new patients needing home care services.  WFMJ
