- ➤ Ignite the Night, a celebration of America’s 250th birthday, will take place on Sunday, July 5 at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre and Wean Park, starting at 6 p.m. with community activities plus a Youngstown Symphony performance at 8:30 p.m. and synchronized fireworks at 9:50 p.m., with parking available nearby. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ McKinley Jr./Sr. High School students in Mrs. Nicole Mathias’s English class connected with seniors from Copeland Oaks in Sebring through a monthly 'Senior to Senior' project that built lasting bonds via themed interviews. WFMJ
- ➤ Students at Howland Local Schools met with NASA engineer Patrick Barnes on Wednesday, May 20, who discussed his work on the Artemis II mission (he is also a local parent) and shared insights on STEM careers and teamwork. The presentation provided firsthand information on space exploration. WFMJ
- ➤ Cover Down Fund awarded 11 seniors $1,500 cash scholarships plus a $250 college check at Salvatore’s Tuesday night in Howland, honoring Purple Heart recipient Gary Gutelius. - ➤ The Canfield crew was honored in Columbus during National EMS Week for its rescue work at a 2025 highway crash that claimed Trooper Nicholas Cayton and left a truck driver critically injured. The award recognizes their quick coordination and commitment during a dangerous emergency. WFMJ
- ➤ The Youngstown Council voted on May 20 to plan the deconstruction of the Mahoning River dams — the decision will now be reviewed by city engineers before moving forward. WFMJ
