GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nine low-income Valley communities, including Youngstown, Struthers, Campbell, Warren, Warren Township, Girard, McKinley Heights, Brookfield and Masury, will be eligible for federal tax credits under the reintroduced Neighborhood Homes Investment Act—designed to close the value gap in areas with high poverty and low home values—if the bill passes. The act is expected to support over half a million new or rehabilitated homes while promoting local job growth and revenue.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Representatives Monica Robb-Blasdel and Dontavius Jarrells introduced the bipartisan Lead Line Replacement Act, which will require every public water system to replace lead service lines within the next 15 years if passed. At a Wednesday morning press conference, officials said the bill will ban partial repairs, have the Ohio EPA manage the rollout, and is expected to return $32 to $45 for every $1 invested — a move aimed at reducing lead exposure risks.  WFMJ
  • Champion township trustees met in a special session on Wednesday to plan a new resolution that sets guidelines for recreational marijuana dispensaries—these rules will limit the number of shops, hours of operation, building appearance, and police presence. Trustees said the current medical dispensary guidelines will be replaced so that tax revenue can support part-time police and local services.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Newton Falls City Manager Mike Novotny said the city was considering installing speed cameras in its school zones and heard proposals from Blue Line Solutions (which works with Youngstown and Campbell) at Wednesday's council meeting as officials examined the measure to improve safety in anticipation of part-time officers returning.  WFMJ
