  • Today, Memorial Day events will honor veterans across the Valley with parades, memorial services, and ceremonies starting as early as 9 a.m. in Austintown and continuing in Beaver Township, Boardman, YOUNGSTOWN, and several Trumbull County communities—each featuring local organizers and backup plans in case of rain.  The Vindicator
  • Officials remind local families to keep grills 3 feet away from homes and flammable items and to check for grill damage—adding that safe clearances should be maintained around bonfires during Memorial Day weekend. Dietitian Teresa Eury advised washing hands before cooking, preventing raw meat juices from touching other foods, and refrigerating leftovers quickly to avoid foodborne illness.  WYTV
  • Joseph Perone, a 99-year-old Navy veteran from Girard now living in Liberty, recalled his World War II service where he helped rescue sailors and save ships. He will turn 100 on June 18 — his story is featured as the first in a weekly series honoring local veterans.  The Vindicator
  • McDonald residents gathered at Woodland Park on Sunday for a Memorial Day weekend service to honor local veterans who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. Mayor Ray Lewis and Capt.   • Township fire crews in Bazetta rescued a dog from a burning mobile home on Larry Lane this weekend — two residents escaped safely before firefighters retrieved the dog, gave it oxygen, and its family took it to a veterinarian.  Tribune Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • A trooper clocked a station wagon at 84 mph in a 50-mph zone on Interstate 680 today and began a high-speed chase through Youngstown and Campbell but ended it over public safety concerns—authorities now have the license plate and are searching for the driver.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the 16th annual Men’s Rally in the Valley at Stambaugh Auditorium, around 1,000 local men gathered to pray and listen to speakers on living with strength and kindness. Dave Plegge, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer six weeks ago, received support from a prayer team and will begin treatment Tuesday at Salem Regional Medical Center—Walter Deecki III also said the rally helped strengthen his faith as he works to overcome his struggles.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Moderalli Excavating Inc.—a Poland-based company—filed a lawsuit against Trumbull County Land Reutilization Corporation, Trumbull County Land Bank and Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership over the awarding of a demolition contract for the abandoned Reeves building in Warren. The company claimed its $387,000 bid was the lowest and that awarding a $522,000 contract violated state law and federal guidelines, and it seeks injunctions to halt the demolition.  The Vindicator
