Boardman held its 121st annual Memorial Day service Monday, May 26 at Boardman Park’s Maag Outdoor Arts Amphitheater where U.S. Navy veteran Jennifer Baun honored fallen service members such as Lt. Sharon Lane, Eleanor Vietti and Donald Clark who sacrificed their lives.

The event, organized by the local Kiwanis Club, featured a flyover by fighter jets and a parade from Boardman Center Intermediate School that brought hundreds of local attendees — a clear tribute to their heroes.

A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after falling from a second-story window at the Pauni Apartments on Liberty Blvd in Cortland—a witness reported that a cat had been thrown out of the window just before his fall; police and firefighters responded just before 8:45 p.m. and his condition is not yet known.

The Poland Historical Society has announced an art show—the first in decades—as part of Celebrate Poland, and local artists will drop off family-friendly entries with a $10 fee at Little Red Schoolhouse on Center Road from noon to 2 p.m. between June 1 and June 15; selected works will be exhibited on the green at Village Town Hall on June 28 before top winners are later displayed at House of Benny’s at 122 S. Today, Warren hosts The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the south lawn of Packard Music Hall and free to visit 24 hours until June 1.

Local students helped expand a documentary of Idora Park by building a 3D model of the historic ballroom using decades-old photos and rare footage.

Produced by Choffin Career Center’s media instructor Thomas Gregory, the film is updated from 44 minutes+56 minutes to meet PBS requirements and will be finalized over the summer.

TCTC students built a 9-hole miniature golf course on campus as part of a class project with help from landscaping and construction students and a $5,000 grant from the Ohio STEM Learning Network—each hole represents a different school program and future classes will maintain the project.

A FirstEnergy subsidiary will hold a public informational meeting on June 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tyler Mahoning Valley History Center to discuss a proposed 6-mile, 138-kilovolt transmission line aimed at reinforcing the electric grid for about 15,000 customers in Youngstown and Campbell—details include upgrades to the Lincoln Park and Riverbend substations and a new connecting line.

Local veterinarian Dr. Maureen Altman warns pet owners to watch for signs of overheating in pets as summer nears, noting that heavy panting, dark red gums, and thick drool are key signals to stop activity.

She advises cooling pets quickly with water on their head—ears and tongue and choosing grassy areas over hot pavement for walks.

Phoenix Toney, a 7-year-old from Austintown, left cheerleading and gymnastics to join the all-girls Red Rose Wrestling Club that meets twice a week at Dinger’s Athletic Facility on state Route 14.

The club helps girls learn wrestling skills and build confidence—coaches Joey Murray and Jordan Beadle lead the growing program.
