COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girard officials are considering a mountain bike trail on the Girard Lakes property to boost local business. They will visit a similar course at Lake Milton on June 9 (rain date June 16) to review its features.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Niles will open Riverside Park on Thursday at noon with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the corner of First and Brown along the Mahoning River. Officials (including Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz and city council members) will join Tootie’s Lunchbox food truck as part of the Downtown Riverfront Revitalization Project.  Tribune Chronicle

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A roadway in Milton Township was closed yesterday after a gas line was struck near Mahoning Avenue between State Route 534 and Newton Falls Road. The gas company proceeded to investigate the leak (no evacuation was issued) as crews reported the incident just before 5:30 p.m.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Skippy’s Tavern opened its doors at 11 a.m. Tuesday in a renovated space at 12 N. Broad St. in Canfield and now offers regional favorites and custom drinks daily until midnight.  WFMJ
  • Western Reserve Transit Authority named six small business winners on Tuesday, May 26 from over 70 entries — they will now compete for the title of WRTA Small Business of the Year at an Awards Presentations dinner at 530 Mahoning Avenue on May 28.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Trumbull Career & Technical Center in Warren earned national honors at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Nashville from May 6 to May 10. They received awards in video production, multimedia, computer animation, and leadership that recognized their talent and hard work.  WFMJ
  • The Youngstown Board of Education proposed awarding a bus contract to Cincinnati-based Petermann Bus Co. (established in 1921) to ease transportation challenges amid a driver shortage and rising costs. The board will vote on the recommendation on Tuesday, June 9.  The Vindicator
  • Howland High School held its graduation ceremony Tuesday evening at Tiger Stadium; 179 students received diplomas (18 were Top 10 and 25 graduated summa cum laude).  Tribune Chronicle
  • Today, the Youngstown Press Club awarded $16,000 in scholarships to four journalism students at Capital University, Ohio University, and Youngstown State University — each student receiving $4,000 to support their media studies.  WFMJ
  • Junior Achievement will open BizTown at Eastwood Mall as a mini city with 15 storefronts to teach grades 4 through 6 about business and community roles. The program will build real world skills along with classroom lessons to boost financial literacy + teamwork.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emergency 911 dispatch services in Mahoning County resumed at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday after an outage beginning Tuesday night around 10:45 p.m.+ Some local agencies provided alternative numbers until systems were fully restored.  WFMJ
  • City officials are considering a mountain bike trail at Girard Lakes and will visit a similar trail at Lake Milton on June 9 (rain date June 16) to check its design, Tonya Carpenter of the ODNR told council. The trail may offer up to 10 miles of paths.  The Vindicator
  • State transportation said overnight ramp closures on I-680 in Boardman and Beaver townships began Tuesday night to mill asphalt. Work will continue through Friday morning, with a weekend shutdown at the intersection of I-680 and Western Reserve Road starting Friday at 6 p.m. and detours set for drivers.  WFMJ
