BUSINESS NEWS

  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that more than 30,000 My First Snowman toys made by Ohio-based Step2 are being recalled due to a choking hazard from a top hat that can break—consumers are advised to remove the hat immediately from toys sold online at Amazon, Walmart, Step2.com, and Wayfair.com between March and December. No injuries have been reported, although 47 incidents of the top hat breaking were noted.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • YPD is searching for Brandon Crespo, 27, who served time for burglaries and is now suspected of several break-ins on the South Side including a Dunkin Donuts incident early today—he was last seen wearing a white jacket, black pants and a head covering.  WKBN
  • Investigators probed explosion damage on a 2020 Buick Envision outside a home on North Hartford Avenue on the West Side Tuesday morning (neighbors reported a loud blast at about 3 a.m.) as the 91-year-old owner (who had recently had surgery) called 911 at 9 a.m. while the crime lab and bomb squad began further checks.  The Vindicator
  • An inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at a Youngstown prison shortly before 11:30 Tuesday night and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead—officials said the cause of death is unknown and no foul play is suspected.  WFMJ
  • Window World filed a response in a wrongful death lawsuit linked to a home explosion in Ellsworth Township that killed four people— the filing in Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas denies the company’s role in damaging propane gas lines and claims other factors may have led to the incident.  WYTV

  • Lita Ford will headline Rock The Rich Center concert with the Vindys at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre on Saturday to raise funds for the Rich Center for Autism + boost support for its programs. Fans will join a high energy show as tickets remain available on Ticketmaster.  WYTV

  • Flor 'Shorty' Navarro donated $1M to the Kilcawley: Centered on the Future Campaign at YSU in memory of his wife, Elba Navarro— the outdoor patio near The Rock plaza will be renamed the Shorty and Elba Navarro Outdoor Patio.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officers and others gathered on May 29 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel to honor law enforcement who died in the line of duty since the 1800s. Police cruisers—flashing lights and sirens—led a procession that started at the WKBN 27 First News studio parking lot and moved down South Avenue in Youngstown.  WYTV
  • Governor DeWine launched a campaign this week to urge parents to spend more time practicing driving with their teens — the Ohio Traffic Safety Office provided training videos and resources to help meet a 50-hour practice requirement before deadly crash periods. This effort comes as the state works to reduce fatal crashes during the summer’s 100 Deadliest Days.  WYTV
