Ben Mischey, 93, a retired Air Force mechanic, runs Big Ben’s Clock Shop in Austintown.

He served at the Youngstown Air Force Base in the 1950s and later in Greenland — now, he repairs clocks due to supply issues and plans to work as long as he can.

Several local events are scheduled this week: Painted Brick Books starts Monday at McKinley Memorial Library in Niles at 5:30 p.m.; Youth Farm Safety Day is Friday in Williamsfield; and clinics, a sewing class and festivals round out a busy calendar in Warren, Girard and Weathersfield.

At its June meeting, the Trumbull County Educational Service Center board cut the assistant coordinator position for the carpentry apprenticeship program to save $125,000, effective July 31.

The board also approved contracts with Pennsylvania Western University and Youngstown State University and hired a new curriculum supervisor starting Aug. 1.

Ohio Edison officials will relocate an active osprey nest today at 9 a.m. at the 2500 block of Elm Road in Cortland to protect birds and maintain power reliability (the move secured special approval from state and federal wildlife agencies).

The Carl Nunziato Youngstown VA Clinic hosted its annual Vet Fest Saturday where veterans, active service members and their families accessed vital resources including primary care, mental health services and physical therapy.

The event also allowed local heroes to reconnect and share their stories.
