CRIME NEWS

  • In Liberty, a Saturday night explosion caused by illegal fireworks killed 34-year-old Justin Braun and injured an unnamed man and a 4-year-old who suffered burns as fire crews responded at a home on East Montrose Street—Northlawn Drive.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown State University will launch a fully online Associate of Science in Health Information Management program this fall to train students in managing patient records and coding medical data—preparing them for national certification and future jobs in hospitals, doctors’ offices, or insurance companies. Applications for the degree are open now.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown State University’s robotics team the Moon Miners took third place in the 2024 NASA Lunabotics Challenge held at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The seven-student team, made up of six seniors & one sophomore, earned two $250 awards & a plaque for third-place finishes in Autonomy and Construction despite a modest $5,500 budget.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the law department determined Councilwoman Amber White is a legal resident of the 7th Ward, the city will soon hire a third-party investigator—approved by the board—to verify her residency at Mayor Jamael Tito Brown's request; White updated her address and said she is not worried about the review.  The Vindicator
  • Officials from Howland Township, Warren Township, and the City of Warren are considering a Joint Economic Development District to oversee a Kimberly Clark plant near Pine Avenue—this plan would fund $30 million in improvements without using taxpayer money while allowing the municipalities to keep plant income taxes. A public comment meeting is scheduled for June 11 at 5 p.m. in Warren Council Chambers, and the first phase of the plant, expected to create 500 jobs, will begin in two to three years.  WFMJ
  • Two scenic roads in Mill Creek MetroParks, High Drive and Bears Den Drive, will be closed beginning Wednesday for upgrades that include a new asphalt surface, fresh pavement markings, and aggregate shoulders—a project that will last about three weeks weather permitting. Access to Scholl Pavilion and Chestnut Hill Drive will vary with each phase of construction.  WYTV
  • Youngstown city council members met on Monday to review a draft law aimed at stopping tire dumping after a committee reported a site storing 2,000 tires. Council members including Mike Durkin, Jimmy Hughes, and Samantha Turner said the law will require business registration and stricter enforcement—key steps to curb the problem.  WYTV
