- ➤ The Weathersfield Flag Day Festival began yesterday at 3750 South Main Street and will run through Saturday with live music, rides, and games. Today, RDNA performs from 7 to 11 p.m. — a parade is set for Friday at 6 p.m. with additional attractions throughout the three-day event. WFMJ
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ An off road vehicle crashed with an SUV in Weathersfield Township early Thursday near Old Town Girard Road—leaving its driver and passenger in critical condition while the SUV driver was unharmed; police are investigating the cause. WKBN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Peter Levitski (31), a Youngstown man with a history of domestic violence, pleaded guilty last month to threatening a police officer and was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Judge Maureen Sweeney (Mahoning County Common Pleas Court). WKBN
- ➤ Police and state troopers found guns and marijuana in two cars impounded at 703 Wilson Ave after a chase that ended Monday at 11 p.m.—the Jeep held an AR-15 and a 9mm handgun while the Charger had packs of marijuana and vape pens—and suspect Derrian Thomas is out on $7,500 bond with a preliminary hearing set for June 18. - ➤ The Regional Chamber said the Valley's population has grown and jobs have increased since the area hit a low in 2023. Companies like Ultium Cells and Foxconn have boosted employment & housing demand while a new Kimberly-Clark plant in Howland is expected to add more jobs and drive a council to speed up home building. - ➤ Youngstown State was renewed as a Purple Star university by the Ohio Department of Higher Education after a three-year review that began with its initial designation in May 2022. The renewal confirms the school’s ongoing commitment to supporting active military and veteran students and staff. WFMJ
- ➤ Youngstown State University is offering the EmpowerVetEd Grant to help veterans, active military members, and military spouses enroll in and complete an educator preparation program. The grant was created in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce – the Department of Veteran Services to remove enrollment barriers. WFMJ

- ➤ State Sen. Al Cutrona secured $2,185,000 in appropriations for four Mahoning Valley projects in the Ohio Senate budget bill, including $1.25M to expand Youngstown State University’s Excellence Training Center, $500K for Boardman flood mitigation, $250K for a pipeline study, and $185K for Poland’s Forest Connector project. The budget must be reconciled with the House version and approved by Gov. Mike DeWine by June 30—ensuring the funds boost local economic development and quality of life. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Lawyers for Insight Hospitals are asking county commissioners and city leaders to meet in the coming weeks to discuss plans to reopen Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Hillside Hospitals—officials say the chain has applied for licenses, received $200,000, and expects help from state offices.
