COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Newton Township Cemetery Bridge was restored and dedicated to local veterans after a Saturday morning ceremony in Newton Township. The bridge received $50,000 from veteran organizations for repairs such as new paint and welded beams and was marked with plaques and a free luncheon provided by VFW Post 3332.  WYTV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Girard business held its third free root beer tasting event on Father’s Day and announced the return of Golden Age Soda— a local staple revived with its original flavors and a special limited edition. The soda is now available at Sweet Memories Vintage Tees and will officially launch next weekend.  WYTV
  • A local business in Girard hosted a Father’s Day celebration on Sunday, June 15th with a free root beer tasting and a dad joke contest—drawing community members to sample about a dozen soda flavors. The shop also announced it will bring back Golden Age Soda, a discontinued Youngstown classic with original and limited edition founding flavors available ahead of its official launch next weekend.  WKBN
  • Audriana Monroe turned her passion for art into a small business by launching Audriana’s Art Shop from her mom’s Boardman studio, where she creates custom banners, invitations and business cards while working as an office manager—she posted her first online product for Father’s Day.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • Dustin Shamp, 29, of Youngstown was booked into Mahoning County Jail Friday for allegedly shooting a dog in Campbell — he must stay away from pets until he appears in court Tuesday.  WFMJ
  • Animal Charity of Ohio urged local leaders and the community on WFMJ Weekend Today to increase support as animal abuse and neglect cases rose—its team rescued 14 neglected dogs from a urine-soaked home in Youngstown and noted that it lacks government funding while providing free services.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newton Township Board of Trustees dedicated the cemetery bridge today to honor local veterans after American Legion Post 236, AMVETS Post 112, and VFW Post 3332 donated $50,000 for its restoration—Trustee Chair Peter Augusta said the plaque will remind users of the sacrifices veterans made.  WFMJ
  • Today, a road project in Weathersfield Township will upgrade County Line Road and W. Webb Road by grinding, widening, repaving, replacing culverts and catch basins, installing storm pipes, and adding new road markings — a $1 million effort funded by federal and state grants — with work expected to finish by the end of July.  WYTV
  • Youngstown City Council is set to meet Wednesday to consider borrowing up to $18 million for water projects that will upgrade the pump station and replace aging waterlines; the council will also review new contracts for parking enforcement, emergency sewer repairs, engineering services and police funding — all designed to improve the city's aging infrastructure.  The Vindicator
