CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were indicted for defrauding elderly victims in Northeast Ohio, including several in Warren, using grandparent and tech support scams in May and June 2024 — officials said the suspects collected over $201,000 and laundered the money through cryptocurrency accounts.  WYTV
  • Jordan Kennedy of Youngstown was sentenced Tuesday to 57 months in prison for federal weapons charges after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a felon (the charges stemmed from gun incidents on July 8, 2023 and Feb. 6 following a 2016 robbery conviction).  WKBN
  • Stephen Kyle Hansen, 33, from Las Vegas, is facing seven criminal charges after a disturbance on Hull Street in Sharon before 12:30 p.m. where a victim shot at him and he fled to a vacant home—he is held on $250,000 bail with a preliminary hearing set for 11:15 a.m. on June 27.  WFMJ
  • Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Dellick ruled Wednesday that a 14-year-old boy will stand trial in juvenile court for the March 23 shooting death of 19-year-old Keondre Lewis at a home on Rhoda Avenue on the West Side—his trial dates have not yet been set and he remains in custody.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • The three-day Ribs-N-Rock Festival began Thursday at DeBartolo Commons at Southern Park Mall and will continue through Saturday, offering barbecue, beverages and live music to local fans. Gates open at noon daily with free entry until 3 p.m.—fees increase after that, and the event features Chris Higbee on Thursday, The Clarks performing today and Fuel set for Saturday, plus an afterparty each night at Steel Valley Brew Works.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown observed Juneteenth on Thursday with a fireworks and food truck celebration downtown at Wean Park — the Market Street Bridge was closed from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. for a safe setup. The Youngstown Playhouse hosted a festival of new works at Playhouse Lane starting at 7 p.m. with staged readings and audience feedback, and admission cost $5.  WFMJ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The ODNR Division of Wildlife partnered with the University of Dayton’s Gantchoff Lab to collar a female black bear in Ashtabula County on June 3 to study its return; the GPS collar will send location data—helping scientists track the bear’s movements. Officials plan to collar up to 20 bears—using public sightings to guide the study—and they urge residents to report observations via the HuntFish OH app.  WFMJ

  • Ohio Senate Bill 138 is on Gov. Mike DeWine's desk and would criminalize operators of uncertified recovery houses that fail to meet strict safety and care standards— a measure supported by mental health leaders in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The bill aims to protect vulnerable people in early recovery.  WFMJ
