  • The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle staff have been named finalists in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors competition for Division II newsrooms with winners to be announced at the awards banquet on August 3 in Columbus. Reporter David Skolnick, court and police reporter Ed Runyan, and two sports staff earned finalist spots in special categories — a nod to the newsroom's dedication to local news.  The Vindicator

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday morning at around 8:40 a.m., firefighters responded to a blaze on the 7500 block of Hayes Orangeville Road NE in Hartford and saved all occupants who escaped by seconds while the two-story wood-frame home was completely lost—neighbors and the American Red Cross provided temporary assistance to the displaced family.  WFMJ
  • A dog is in critical condition at Newton Falls Animal Hospital after suffering a heat stroke on Monday in Warren — its temperature reached 108.5°F — when it was found outside without food or water in weather over 100 degrees.  WFMJ

  • The state released its eighth annual Ohio Ice Cream Trail list Monday, naming local favorites like Warren’s Cockeye Creamery and Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt as must-visit spots for National Ice Cream Month — the list features over 150 shops statewide. The selection highlights Valley businesses that support Ohio-made ice cream and local jobs — a nod to both long-standing creameries and new flavor innovators.  Tribune Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • A dog belonging to an OSHP trooper working with city police helped uncover a bag of cocaine hidden in a pull-out panel during a traffic stop on Interstate 680 at the Market Street exit around 6:45 p.m.—resulting in the arrest and booking of 27-year-old Deion Edwards on a first-degree felony cocaine possession charge.  WKBN
  • An 83-year-old man had his bond revoked by a Mahoning County judge after he was arrested for aggravated burglary—an incident linked to a Market Street apartment dispute—and faced an earlier indictment for drug trafficking from an undercover investigation.  WYTV
  • On Friday, city police and state troopers on the Impact Initiative arrested 32-year-old Craig Washington for felony drug possession and 33-year-old Jeffrey Brown for having weapons under disability, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle & tampering with evidence after a loaded 9mm gun and crack cocaine were found on the South Side, and both men were arraigned Monday in municipal court.  WYTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday at Tyler History Center in Youngstown, students attended a Freedom School session hosted by Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past where Rev. J.P. Robles read a book on the civil rights movement and explained the 1955 murder of Emmett Till that left 9-year-old Gionna Floyd upset. The six-day series—will end Saturday with a Salem walking tour—and is designed to boost critical-thinking skills and teach social justice lessons.  The Vindicator

  • The Youngstown Neighborhood Development bought the old Park Inn building in the Glenwood corridor for $225,000 and will soon replace its roof to stabilize the structure (no immediate development plan has been set).  WFMJ
