COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in downtown Youngstown apartments have suffered extreme heat after three days of 90+ degree temperatures because many units have long lacked air conditioning. The City of Youngstown has contacted property owners for repairs while some residents use personal fans or stay with family to cope+ their health is at risk.  WFMJ
  • More than 1,300 people lost power in Trumbull County Wednesday morning, with over 550 in Newton Township, nearly 400 in Lordstown and almost 250 in Warren Township. Power was almost completely restored by 6:20 a.m. as FirstEnergy worked to repair the outages.  WKBN
  • Cardinal Mooney will hold its second annual two-mile Fun Run and walk at 10 a.m. this Saturday at the MVR in Sleepy Hollow—volunteers will shoot red and gold powder on runners while proceeds benefit school athletics and clubs, with a pitstop at Penguin City Brewery for a lighter pace.  WYTV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Struthers man was booked Tuesday into Mahoning County Jail and now faces felony assault and drug possession charges after an incident Sunday in Campbell where he allegedly accelerated his SUV to drag a woman during an argument—witnesses reported he drove a red Hummer and a search of his vehicle turned up prescription pills.  WFMJ
  • Jacoby Walker, 20, was sentenced to eight to 10½ years after pleading guilty on May 8 to involuntary manslaughter with a firearm specification for his role in the 2022 shooting death at a cemetery on the East Side & prosecutors confirmed he was present during the incident while other defendants already serve prison terms.  WKBN
  • Jacoby Walker, who was 17 at the time he fatally shot 22-year-old Isiah Helms—whose body was found at Mt. Hope Veterans Memorial Cemetery in February—and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a firearm specification on May 12 is scheduled to be sentenced today at 10 a.m. before Judge Anthony D'Apolito in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, with prosecutors recommending 8 to 10½ years in prison.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 24, YSU trustees approved a minimum 3% tuition hike for the 2025-2026 school year, exempting fall enrollees under the Penguin Tuition Promise. President Bill Johnson and VP Neal McNally said the move is needed to cover rising costs—tuition will be fixed for four years and additional fee adjustments were proposed.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Valley Christian High School is planning a new football and track facility on the former South High Fieldhouse site and has scaled back the project from $9 million to $10 million to a range of $3 million to $5 million due to budget concerns—fundraisers will follow after demolition work is done. The Valley Legends Stadium, which will hold 1,500 to 3,000 spectators, is set to begin work in fall.  The Vindicator
