COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Humane agents at Animal Charity in Boardman advised pet owners to secure their pets on a leash or keep them indoors because both planned and rogue fireworks may frighten animals + they urged neighbors to share firework schedules to help keep pets safe.  WYTV
  • Rogers Community Auction and Flea Market celebrated its 70th anniversary on July 4 by unveiling its new venue, Backyard Live, on the market’s west end in Rogers—featuring an outdoor stage, green space, a bar, and merchandise. The debut season will include a kickoff show with headliner CJ Solar at 8 p.m. and additional acts such as Runaway June on August 22 and Kyle Ray on September 19.  WFMJ
  • The 12th Run for Caitlin will take place at Canfield High School at 9 a.m. on July 26 to honor Caitlin Yager, who was killed in a car accident on Christmas—her family has raised $145,000 in scholarships through the race.  WKBN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, a twin-engine plane crashed near Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport killing six people, and commissioners extended their condolences to the Weller, Blake, and Maxin families — while they work with Trumbull County to offer counseling support.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • YSU graduate Bob Barko Jr. is repainting over 100 fire hydrants on campus to refresh his famous penguin art—each one is hand painted with unique details. He has touched up about 20 hydrants so far this summer and will complete the project by October—adding a local touch to campus.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jeffrey Ryznar and Dr. Meredythe McNally, both alumni of local high schools, delivered dueling commencement speeches yesterday that honored their schools and marked a homecoming rooted in a friendly rivalry—one inspired by a playful bet at graduation.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown collected nearly $1.5 million in fines from school zone speed cameras over the last two school years but spent only $51,522 because state law limits spending to safety improvements—Mayor Jamael Tito Brown said the city will consult with the school district and finance and law departments to plan how to use the funds. The cameras will continue to operate as classes are in session.  The Vindicator
  • The Youngstown Police Department is hiring full-time police officers with a salary range of $43,680 to $62,479 — applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license, OPOTA certification, and local residency. Applications must be submitted online by 4 p.m. on August 6.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, five local boxing legends — Jeff 'Prime Time' Lampkin, Ray 'Boom Boom' Mancini, Greg 'The Flea' Richardson, Kelly Pavlik and Harry 'Dirty Harry' Arroyo — were honored at a ceremony at Wean Park where each received a plaque on the Walk of Fame. A few hundred fans and local officials attended and celebrated the fighters' achievements and strong ties to our community.  The Vindicator
