- ➤ On Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, a 33-year-old Niles woman filed a lawsuit accusing the City of Warren, Police Chief Erik Merkel, and former officer Michael Edwards Jr.—currently serving a 34-to-39-year sentence—for sexually assaulting her in fall 2023 after he responded to an emergency call in February 2023, and she alleged a pattern of misconduct within the department. - ➤ A Trumbull County man, Christopher M. Callaway, 41, of West Farmington, was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison on July 1 for grooming and sexually exploiting dozens of minors across multiple states while coercing them into making thousands of explicit images and videos, and he was fined $40,000 under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act—he targeted vulnerable girls aged 10 to 17 on social media from 2015 to 2022. - ➤ Youngstown police chased a wanted suspect—Antonio Crockett, 19—who fled a funeral on the North Side when his truck crashed into a fence in the 1500 block of First Street around 1:30 p.m. on Monday; he faces charges for failure to comply and drug possession and will be arraigned today while a 16-year-old is booked for improper handling of a firearm. - ➤ A judge approved the sale of the former Chill Can plant property to the city on July 2 in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court; the city paid over $1.3 million at a Sheriff’s sale and was awarded a judgment for $231,828 with interest against M.J. - ➤ The Mahoning County Board of Elections rejected five candidate filings and Aleesha Foster’s bid for mayor while scheduling a Monday 4:30 p.m. hearing to decide on John White’s eligibility due to his not meeting the five-year voter requirement—while also removing three Campbell council candidates and a Poland Village Council candidate and certifying Derrick McDowell and Becky Rudzik, with legal action a possibility if building issues remain unfixed by Aug. 29.
