COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Penguin City Brewing Co. and the Canfield Fair have teamed up to create a limited-edition beer can to mark the fair’s 179th celebration, which will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 1. The commemorative can will be available starting mid-July at local retailers and at the brewery’s taproom—460 E Federal St. in Youngstown.  The Vindicator
  • The Vienna Volunteer Fire Department is collecting donations to help Capt. Gene McCarthy pay his medical bills and other costs after he suffered a life-threatening emergency and is expected to be off duty for four to six months — donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.  WKBN
  • Volunteers in Niles began rolling dough and assembling cheese puffs on Thursday morning for the upcoming Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival, which is only seven days away. The treat—one of the festival’s staple items—will be among the more than 20,000 sold during the four-day fundraiser.  WYTV
  • Chef Stephanie Lavanty of Nicolinni’s Chophouse posted on Facebook about how rising costs, chain competition and local construction are forcing neighborhood restaurants to close soon—she urged community members to support local dining and preserve the area's food traditions.  WYTV
  • A local group Hope For Renewal met with Mahoning County Commissioners on Thursday morning to promote a 'Saluting Our Heroes' veterans luncheon at Glenwood Grounds Cafe on September 13 from 1 to 4 p.m.—organizers plan to serve up to 500 veterans with free lunch and are reaching out to local nursing homes to invite those in need.  WYTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Millennial Theatre Company is bringing a modern version of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat to the Youngstown Playhouse starting today and running through Sunday as well as next weekend. Samuel Darin—who plays Joseph—explained the show replaces the normal Elvis impersonator in the pharaoh sequence with a nod to Beyonce’s musical influence, and the performance runs 1 hour and 45 minutes with an intermission.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mahoning County officials are pushing Columbus lawmakers to act on a potential ballot measure that could wipe out property taxes + a state working group will offer proposals for reform by Sept. 30 with lawmakers set to debate the changes next week.  WYTV
  • Mahoning County voters will decide on a 1-mill renewal levy for senior services on the November ballot+ if passed it will bring in more than $4 million a year to support 17 programs from over 50 local agencies.  WYTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trumbull County Commissioners said Mercy Health will break ground next month in Champion Township on a new 30,000-square-foot emergency room with 25 beds and a helipad — a project designed to boost emergency care after Insight Hospitals closed near Kent State Trumbull. Construction is expected to finish in December 2026.  WFMJ
