  • Steward Health Care and its debtors filed a lawsuit against former top executives including Dr. Ralph de la Torre, Dr. Michael Callum, James Karam, and Dr. Sanjay Shetty for actions that drained company assets and led to bankruptcy and the closure of local hospitals. The complaint filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Texas alleges fraudulent transfers over an $111 million dividend, a $1.1 billion hospital acquisition, and a $134 million asset sale—seeking more than $200 million in damages to repay creditors.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • A federal court unsealed a bill charging former deputy Kip T. Danks, 59, with misprision of a felony after he allegedly advised Hure Orr during a Jan. 9 drug investigation at 2615 Glenwood Ave—Danks is accused of instructing Orr to avoid phone calls to hinder evidence gathering.  WKBN
  • A Columbiana County judge denied Wellsville man Tyrell Travers’s motion on Wednesday to withdraw his life without parole sentence for the 2022 shooting death of Dion McMillon — Travers was convicted in June 2023 of murder and aggravated murder — leaving his sentence unchanged.  WFMJ
  • Jason Gribble, 46, faces two fifth-degree felony counts after police found a dead golden retriever and a dead cat at a vacant home on Alva Ave NW in Champion Township Thursday afternoon, with the house in deplorable condition—smelling of feces and trash—and Gribble saying he could not bury the animals sooner because of his health issues and frozen ground.  WYTV
  • A Warren man pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to selling fentanyl and cocaine from a house on Montgomery Avenue NW—he is now in Mahoning County Jail awaiting sentencing.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Poland Superintendent Craig Hockenberry said schools may cut programs if a federal freeze on five vital grant programs is not lifted before the school year starts—this freeze could affect support for 160 to 180 special needs students and delay repairs of aging school buildings. Local officials are closely watching the situation to protect essential services.  WYTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents from East Palestine filed a federal lawsuit in Youngstown against Norfolk Southern after the company vented and burned five vinyl chloride tank cars following the 2023 derailment—alleging that the move worsened the chemical spill and contaminated air, water, and soil. Judge Benita Pearson has been assigned to the case.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • John Hickey updated the Trumbull County Council of Governments in Howland that a free CodeRED system now offers emergency alerts for local governments following last week’s county fair—he added that while the program was secured for $13,500 instead of an estimated $52,000, upgrading older siren systems would cost $30,000 if needed. This update emphasizes the county’s efforts to provide efficient emergency management services.  Tribune Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • New day centers will open at 2154 Elm Road NE (Warren) and 2701 Market Street (Youngstown) to offer the PACE program that helps adults 55 and older stay in their homes with free medical and support services for Medicare and Medicaid enrollees. Elected officials will join ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 11 a.m. on July 21 in Youngstown and on July 22 in Warren, with tours following the events.  WFMJ
