The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County held a discussion on AI ethics Tuesday, July 21 where residents shared diverse views on artificial intelligence.

The library announced plans for more conversations later this year — a series supported by the Urban Library Council and Everyday Democracy.

This week local events include Mecca Community Day on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the township park on State Route 46 with free family activities + Alta Head Start enrollment Thursday at 261 Monroe St NW in Warren and veteran benefit ride and Bowlathon events in Girard and Boardman.

The Youngstown Wine and Jazz Festival returns on Saturday, July 25 at the Foundation Amphitheatre (doors open at 6 p.m.) and features jazz pianist Brian Simpson starting at 7 p.m. Food and wine vendors will be available, and tickets start at $15.

About 150 young explorers took part in a space exploration-themed 4-H Cloverbud Camp at the Canfield Fairgrounds event center, which continues today.

The camp, designed for children ages 5 to 8, offers STEM activities & team building for first-time 4-H participants.

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County donated $8,000 to Summer Discovery to help nearly 6,000 participants stay reading and learning all summer and avoid the summer slide.

The program offers books and activities at every library branch in Mahoning County.

Mahoning County EMA started clearing storm debris in Boardman today with crews from Austintown, ODOT and other departments (focusing on the worst-hit areas in Boardman and Canfield) and will work until Friday with a potential extension into next week.

The Ohio EPA on Tuesday rejected a permit that would allow data centers to discharge cooling water into state waterways after receiving a significant volume of public comments.

The agency said data centers must pursue individual NPDES permits amid concerns over water quality in the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys.

State officials met with downtown SOBE customers Tuesday to discuss a plan using the Buckeye Business Advantage program, credit union 7 17 and Brewer-Garrett to help buildings move off the steam heat system.

The resolution, aimed at easing steep rate hikes, could be finalized soon.

The Ohio EPA rejected a request for a blanket wastewater permit for data centers on Tuesday after receiving about 7,000 comments, and it said each permit will be reviewed individually — a move that comes amid concerns in several Mahoning Valley communities over water use for cooling.
