ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The estate of Cheryl Roush has filed a lawsuit in Youngstown federal court, alleging that Norfolk Southern’s train derailment on February 3 led to the release of toxic chemicals into her home, which caused her fatal injuries on July 25. The suit states Norfolk Southern was unprepared and delayed alerting federal authorities by two hours—actions the estate says worsened her respiratory damage.  WKBN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Taylor-Winfield Technologies announced Tuesday it purchased most assets of the George A. Mitchell Company in Boardman. The acquisition expanded its product line—adding specialized machinery and technology for tube and pipe shaping—and it will continue to support former customers with spare parts, service, and new equipment.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • Trumbull County Judge Ronald Rice was involved in a rollover crash in Vienna Township on Friday and refused a breathalyzer test—resulting in a misdemeanor OVI charge while Canfield Attorney Damian Billak said citizens may lawfully refuse the test under the 5th Amendment even though refusal brings a one-year license suspension.  WFMJ
  • Hubbard police arrested a suspect on Tuesday after a woman locked herself in a bathroom following an alleged threat by her boyfriend—investigators flew a drone inside the home to ensure it was safe before officers entered, and the woman later escaped unharmed.  WFMJ
  • A Lake Milton man, Devlin Schneider (19), was sentenced to time served in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty in May to charges of failing to obey a police officer and obstructing official business from a July 2024 chase when he drove off after being passed out, and he awaits a juvenile court hearing Friday on a pending probation violation before his release.  WYTV
  • Youngstown police are investigating a burglary at a Southside West Philadelphia Avenue apartment where residents reported four masked intruders — wearing black clothing, ski masks, and blue latex gloves — broke in Monday evening, with one attacker using a 9mm pistol to hit a resident before taking $250 and other valuables and fleeing in a silver sedan.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union Local High School will display a donated retired Air Force F-16 Thunderbird Jet on campus starting spring as a tribute to military service and school spirit. The jet was awarded on June 3 and is funded solely by community donations—marking a first for a high school in the United States.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • John Hickey, executive director of the Emergency Management Agency, told the Trumbull County Council of Governments that the county has worked hard to find a new space for the coroner’s office after unsafe conditions were noted in its shared building. County commissioners have been looking for new homes for the 911 Center and coroner’s office since 2024 - funding issues continue to delay the move.  The Vindicator
  • Eastgate Regional Council of Governments got $250,000 from Ohio’s operating budget that was signed into law on July 1+ they will hire a consultant to study a natural gas pipeline along Route 11 that may connect deepwater ports with the Ohio River to improve energy and service gaps in the region. The study will examine if a public-private partnership can boost economic growth and create jobs in Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana counties.  WFMJ
