COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During the Christmas in July event, the Canfield Police Department and Kids Crew of the Mahoning Valley collected new, wrapped toys for Akron Children's Hospital so that every admitted child receives a blanket, pajamas, and a toy. The volunteers filled two cruisers with donations and plan a Miracle Treat Day on July 31 and a Family Fun Night on Aug. 14 — events that continue to support local children.  The Vindicator

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A preliminary report from the NTSB said that on June 29 a twin-engine Cessna 441 Conquest left Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, reached about 100 feet, and crashed in a wooded area near Howland—witnesses reported a change in the engine sound before the crash that killed all six on board.  The Vindicator
  • Cheryl Roush’s estate filed a lawsuit in Youngstown District Court on Monday that blames the Feb. 3 train derailment and vent-and-burn of vinyl chloride for her death today and seeks at least $250,000 by alleging that hazardous chemical exposure weakened her lungs while the railroad rushed to resume operations.  The Vindicator

  • Academy Sports + Outdoors will open its new 55,500-square-foot store at 1280 Doral Drive in Boardman in August, creating about 60 new jobs. The retailer will mark its third Ohio outlet with the new location—offering sports, outdoor, apparel and footwear products—and expand its network across 21 states with 300 stores—company officials said—.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Youngstown Foundation gifted $5 million to YSU’s Kilcawley: Centered on the Future Campaign to support a modern campus center for students. YSU President Bill Johnson said the donation builds on years of community support—helping to create a dynamic space for study and connection.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mahoning County has named Valley firefighter Connor O’Halloran to replace retired 911 administrator Maggie Magee and head emergency planning, as Magee retired in February after more than 30 years on the job. O’Halloran, who worked in Poland and Canfield, will leave his Cardinal Joint Fire District role after this year’s Canfield Fair to begin the new duties.  WYTV
  • Mahoning County Probate Court Judge Robert Rusu Jr. approved a $6.1 million settlement in a civil suit filed by Akil Drake’s family after he died in the Realty Tower explosion on May 28th, reducing some attorney expense requests (which increased the family’s share) and outlining the fund split between Drake’s relatives and estate.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Warren native David M. Toepfer took the oath on July 23 at the U.S. Courthouse in Akron to serve as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio and lead nearly 200 staff in federal and civil litigation (the district covers 40 counties and nearly six million residents, marking the first time in over 117 years a Youngstown-area lawyer has held the role).  WFMJ

  • First responders and athletic trainers from Canfield, Akron Children's Hospital and YSU athletic training students gathered at Canfield High School on Wednesday to review emergency treatment techniques (including spine boarding and splint application) in preparation for high school football; teams will start practice on August 1 and play the season on August 21.  WKBN
