COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Penguin City Brewing in Youngstown is hosting a carnival style brunch series for kids every Sunday until the end of August—running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event features games, prizes, food, a contest with a golden ticket for a free mimosa, and a loyalty card drawing for a birthday brunch for 10 guests.  WKBN
  • On Sunday, the community gathered in Youngstown for a Stop the Violence March and Prayer Walk—hosted by local pastors, clergy, and community leaders—to call for an end to violence. The group, holding its fifth march since 2021, said a 40% reduction in violent crimes came as police increased their presence and new curfews took effect.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • Reverend Kenneth Simon led the Stop the Violence march on Sunday in Youngstown’s south side—FBI data shows that while violent crime has dropped since the pandemic peak, per-capita rates remain high—and Mayor Jamael Tito Brown joined community leaders urging more guidance for youths.  WFMJ
  • Police are investigating after a body was found in a yard on E. Myrtle Avenue near Erie Street around noon Sunday; neighbors told 21 News about the find and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death (it is not yet known if foul play was involved).  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Butler Institute of American Art will host a free art history lecture led by Executive Director Dr. Louis Zona at 2 p.m. on Sunday—where he will discuss his favorite artists. This event is one of four sessions in the Director’s Lecture Series with additional lectures planned on August 10 and August 24.  WYTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Akiva Academy host a first look at the new Altshuler Akiva Academy, Goldstone-Mirkin Family Middle School on the Suzi Solomon Campus from 5 to 6 p.m. at 520 Gypsy Lane (guests may park in the lot between the Jewish Community Center and Heritage Manor). The $1.5 million project adds four classrooms, office spaces and a multipurpose area for Shabbat services and will let the school double its enrollment in the next five years.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown City Council will hold a special meeting today to consider spending up to $30,000 to hire an expert witness to support the city’s appeal of an EPA decision allowing SOBE Thermal Energy Solutions to operate a tire-to-fuel plant downtown—officials say the testimony is needed for upcoming Environmental Review Appeals Commission proceedings.  WFMJ
  • Today, Hubbard Township’s Route 62 between Bell Wick Road and Woodbine Avenue is closed through Thursday for a culvert replacement while Beloit’s State Route 14 is closed through late August for resurfacing and bridge repairs. In Beaver Township, Renkenberger Road is closed today for a culvert replacement with reopening on Tuesday and Lincoln Road is closed Wednesday through Friday for a similar repair—detours are posted at all sites.  WKBN
  • Multiple road projects will begin this week in the Mahoning Valley. Renkenberger Road in Beaver Township will close Monday and Tuesday for a culvert replacement with a detour via New Buffalo Road South, Lincoln Road will close Wednesday through Friday for a culvert replacement with a detour via Calla Road, State Route 14 will close Monday for resurfacing and bridge repairs through late August with a detour via U.S. 224, U.S. Route 62 will close Monday through Thursday for a culvert replacement with a detour via U.S. 422, and Brookdale Avenue will close from August 1 to 10 over Leslie Run.  WFMJ
