- ➤ A first-of-its-kind event—an evening of crafts and creativity—occurred Thursday in downtown Youngstown. Organized by Downtown Special Events coordinator Melanie Clarke-Penella, the event provided some materials—attendees were encouraged to bring their own—and plans call for weekly sessions from 5 to 8 p.m. until the weather gets cold. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Trumbull County Judge Ronald Rice pleaded guilty to DUI after his Mini Cooper rolled over on Scoville North Road in Vienna on July 18—he also pleaded guilty to a firearms charge and received two years of probation with a one-year license suspension, 180 days in jail with 177 days suspended, a requirement to attend a driver’s intervention program and to forfeit his firearm. - ➤ On July 26, Ohio State Highway Patrol held an OVI checkpoint on state Route 7 at Buena Vista Avenue in Boardman between 10 p.m. and midnight where 214 vehicles passed without diversion and troopers later made 2 OVI arrests and gave citations for adult safety belts, driving without a valid license, reckless operation, speed, Move Over Slow Down, a marked lane violation, and expired registration (troopers also did saturation patrols before and after the checkpoint). - ➤ A motorist in Youngstown said he was shot at early Thursday morning near U.S. 422 and Route 62 when a black Dodge Charger appeared to follow him—officers later recovered rifle and pistol casings near the Albert Street ramp. WKBN

- ➤ State Sen. Al Cutrona and Sen. Andrew O. Brenner introduced a bill that would raise local government pension contributions for full-time police officers from 19.5% to 24% over five years—this measure aims to give police benefits like firefighters while its cost impact on cities is a key concern. - ➤ The city board approved two contracts totaling $607,076 with Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Co. for emergency sewer repairs on West Federal Street and near the state Route 711 entrance ramp (3-0 vote) on Thursday, with repairs on West Federal finished a few months ago and storm sewer work still underway. The board also renewed a $225,000 contract with Environmental Collaborative of Ohio to help with federally mandated storm sewer compliance reporting. The Vindicator

- ➤ Mahoning County Public Health is offering Bingocize—a program combining fitness and bingo for seniors 55 and older—to help reduce falls and keep them active. Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 2 from 1-2 p.m. at the Newport Library on Market Street in Youngstown and meet Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10 weeks with preregistration required by calling 330-270-2855, ext. 137.
