COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, two local car teams hosted by Planet Motors LLC held a school supplies giveaway that offered free haircuts, food, and games—200 kids received free backpacks at 1 p.m. while volunteers stayed until 5 p.m. to help prepare them for the new school year.  WKBN
  • The Vindicator is seeking nominations for Mahoning County Firefighter of the Year; nominees must serve with a local fire department, be at least 18 and rank below chief officer, and they will be judged on dedication, productivity, loyalty + professionalism. The winner will be announced during Fire Prevention Week in early October and nominations close Sept. 12.  The Vindicator
  • The Fallen Officer Memorial Run took place Sunday afternoon in Mahoning County as riders, escorted by police, left Penguin City Brewing in Youngstown to honor officers who died in the line of duty and raise funds for the annual memorial service — a tradition running for nearly twenty years. Organized by local police lodges, the ride showed strong respect for the community's fallen officers.  WFMJ
  • Richard Patterson, a Marine veteran from Austintown, worked full time to pay for college and joined the military after his friend died in Vietnam—he became an M-16 rifle instructor and later taught at Trumbull County Joint Vocational School. He helped with Apollo 11’s splashdown recovery and retired in 2015 after facing health challenges.  The Vindicator
  • More than 1,100 guests and over 500 volunteers gathered at Eastwood Field Saturday for the fourth annual Ability Walk & Roll fundraiser, raising about $70,000 for the Ability to Unite Foundation to support people with developmental challenges. 16-year-old Matthew Hynes celebrated his role in the community & his family's support as local schools and baseball teams joined the event.  The Vindicator
  • Local organizations hosted a backpack giveaway Sunday afternoon at Highway Tabernacle Church where Browns players Winston Reid, Jerome Baker, and Nathaniel Watson helped hand out hundreds of backpacks and led drills with kids—this marked the event’s second year aimed at giving back to the community.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • Angelina R. Pesa, 29, from Youngstown pleaded guilty Friday to burglary, misdemeanor domestic violence and misdemeanor assault for a June 18 incident on Argyle Avenue in Boardman + Judge Maureen Sweeney accepted her plea and approved her entry into the CARES Program to help her access mental health treatment.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency will offer amnesty programs in August for parents behind on child support—including options for license reinstatement and warrant amnesty—to help resolve arrearages. The agency handles over 16,551 active cases and collects more than $26,871,000 annually to support local children.  The Vindicator
  • Starting Friday, the ramp from state Route 82 west to Route 46 in Howland will be closed for 14 days as part of the ongoing Diverging Diamond project by the Ohio Department of Transportation. Officials said detours for Route 46—south via Elm Road and north via Elm Road and state Route 305—are in place while other ramps remain closed through fall with the project set to finish in fall 2026.  The Vindicator
