Good morning, Youngstown. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 22nd of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Howland SCOPE reopened on Thursday at the renovated John D. Emmanuel Senior Center at 8273 High St — the center received a $300,000 upgrade funded primarily by Community Development Block Grants that improved the parking lot, kitchen, bathrooms, offices, and flooring. Local leaders and SCOPE supporters attended a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the upgrades after months of construction.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Road closures will affect Mill Creek Park on Sunday, August 24 for the 16th Annual Panerathon as the event limits access to Fellows Riverside Gardens to McKinley Avenue only. The Lake Glacier Boathouse will open at 1 p.m. & the drive will reopen to the public then.  WFMJ
  • Renovations continue at the former Briel's Flowers and Greenhouse at 2326 Belle Vista Ave., which Youngstown CityScape bought in 2021 for a community gardening center. Construction crews are replacing glass with energy-saving polycarbonate and converting a single-family home into a space with a demonstration kitchen, meeting room + makers' market, and horticulture classes while the Briel family supports the project as donors.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crews began clearing the Kilcawley Center in May as work continues on a $58 million renovation that will create a more open student-friendly facility. State representatives and Lake to River toured the site Thursday afternoon and said the project, the largest construction on campus by about $20 million, will be completed in fall.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Poland Township will not renew its road levy—residents will see a tax decrease of $80 per $100,000 of property value starting in February; the township said it has already paid off the levy and paved 85% of its roads.  WFMJ
  • City council will consider a plan Tuesday to let officials spend up to $2 million on two new pumper trucks even though they will cost about $2.1 million in total—firefighters say the trucks will help update an aging fleet.
