COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rotary Club of Youngstown started its annual Operation Warm campaign to provide winter coats to students at Harding, Volney, Taft and St. Joseph the Provider Schools—donations of 20 dollars will help reach a goal of 20000 dollars as the fundraiser runs until September 15 with coats ordered in December and given in October.  WFMJ
  • Today, Oak Hill Cemetery at 344 Oak Hill Ave hosts a free one-hour tour that highlights police officers and firefighters buried there—attendees must gather at the flagpole by 11:45 a.m.  The Vindicator

CRIME NEWS

  • Glen Gabriel, 31, fled from police during a Monday night traffic stop on Logan Gate Road near Logan Way when he ignored commands to exit his vehicle—he was released on bail and pleaded not guilty to obstructing official business and a traffic violation while his tampering with evidence charge awaits further court action.  The Vindicator
  • Police reported break-ins at Insight Health on E. Market Street and at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital on Squires Lane between Friday, August 15 and Monday, August 18—over 1,200 OxyContin pills and hand tools valued at about $400 were stolen.  WKBN
  • Ursuline High School issued a statement on allegations of inappropriate behavior by a few football team members during a June trip, noting the incident was isolated and handled per the Code of Conduct + the Catholic Diocese confirmed no one was placed on leave as the police investigate and additional training for teams and coaches is planned.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ursuline High School released a statement on summer allegations of inappropriate behavior during its football team trip in June and said the school addressed concerns following its Code of Conduct—details are not shared due to student privacy laws. The Catholic Diocese confirmed no player has been placed on leave and police are reviewing the incident.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Photo-enforced speed cameras in Youngstown school zones will be switched on Tuesday, August 26 for the 2025-2026 school year to enforce a 20 mph limit during posted hours; the program covers 21 schools + fines range from $100 to $150 for speeding drivers.  WFMJ
  • Crews are installing posts for a new noise wall project along Interstate 680 in Boardman. ODOT said a section near Midlothian Boulevard will be 14 feet high to protect nearby homes — the project will finish by November.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mercy Health will operate its mobile mammography van throughout September in the Valley to offer screening mammograms that are usually covered by insurance and need no doctor’s order—financial assistance is available for those who qualify.  WFMJ
