COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ CrossWay Family Church is hosting its first annual Community Day in Vienna to help families during the back-to-school season and offer free food, supplies, and fun activities. The event features wood-fired pizza, hot dogs, snowcones, popcorn, books, shoes, used clothes, live music, and a basket raffle. WFMJ
- ➤ Animal Charity of Ohio hosted its third summer adoptions event on Saturday in Boardman, offering adoption and foster applications for those ready to take home a pet. Previous events helped 35 animals find homes (71 in July and 39 so far in August) as the charity continues to match pets with new families. WKBN
- ➤ On Saturday, more than 100 people attended a free document shredding event in Boardman hosted by AAA that shredded bank documents, credit card statements, and papers with Social Security numbers to help prevent identity theft. WKBN
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Crews responded to a house fire on Fairgreen Avenue in Youngstown at 9:30 Saturday evening — the blaze was quickly contained but left smoke from an upstairs window and scorch marks on the porch of a vacant home while officials have not yet determined a cause or reported injuries. WFMJ
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Cobbler’s Corner, a shoe store in Columbiana that has served local customers for 49 years, will close on Aug. 30 because fewer people visit the store and many now buy shoes online—owner Terry Thompson said. He added that lower sales and fewer repair orders show a shift in how people shop today. WKBN
- ➤ Carney Wagyu Cattle Ranch opened its brick-and-mortar store in Champion yesterday—after two years of preparation. Owner Mike Carey said customers can now buy 100% full-blooded wagyu beef items that follow USDA standards by tracing each cow's five-generation ancestry. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rose Carter—executive director of A.C.T.I.O.N.—retired on Saturday when she received a key to the city for her long service to our community. She will keep working through her own foundation to help support local social programs. WKBN
- ➤ Hanover Township opened a new $2.5M emergency services center to house the volunteer fire department and EMS crews, which will boost public safety and cut response times. Crews will begin operating from the facility on Sept. 1—after years of community planning supported by voter approval and state funds. WFMJ
