ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A four-year-old boy, Jakob Braun, died Saturday morning at Akron Children’s Hospital from injuries after a house explosion in Liberty on June 7 — his father died in the blast and a third victim remains in unknown condition as officials investigate illegal fireworks production. Tribune Chronicle
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins renewed his call for a civil commitment law after Scott Grant—convicted in a 1985 murder—was released, saying the law would confine dangerous offenders after they complete their prison terms. WFMJ
- ➤ The Mahoning County OVI Task Force released results from a checkpoint in Austintown at 4545 New Rd that ran from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday—303 vehicles passed through, with 14 diverted and 34 traffic stops made (including four OVI arrests, one summons for a suspended license, two summonses for no operator’s license, and several other citations), and the effort was funded by a federal grant administered through the Ohio Department of Public Safety. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown State University started its fall semester Monday with events like fitness classes, art exhibits, and resource booths—many activities are open to both students and the community. The week will include social mixers, academic fairs, and athletic events that run through the weekend. WFMJ
- ➤ Newton Falls Board of Education approved a new three-year contract with the teachers union that increases base pay by 4% the first year and 3% in the following years—teachers, speech pathologists, and counselors will also pay more for health insurance. Board President Amie Crowder will speak in Washington, D.C. next month to ask for more public money to support public schools serving over 70,000 students. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Youngstown State University and the Western Reserve Transit Authority have partnered to launch a free campus shuttle service that will start this fall and run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The service offers two 16-minute loop routes—one running clockwise and the other counterclockwise—so riders can signal the driver to stop when needed. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, Youngstown City Council will consider emergency legislation to let the Board of Control seek bids for improvements to Spring Commons Park and the West Avenue boat launch. The projects will use State ARPA funds to cover costs not to exceed $2,315,331 for construction and $2,978,000 for administration, design, and engineering (through Eastgate) and (as part of the Appalachian Community Grant Program).
