COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Canfield Fair begins its 179th year with a schedule of agricultural judging, animal shows, demonstrations, and live music at venues like the Michael Kusalaba Event Center — a hub for farm events — and Grandstand. Tickets cost $4 for youth and seniors — $6 for adults —, and the fair runs for six days, ending Sept. 1.  WFMJ
  • Project MKC is hosting its first Wrap Battle at the Project MKC Warehouse in Boardman on Saturday, Sept. 13 from noon to 5 p.m.—teams of four will compete in timed challenges to support the Diaper Bank that supplies over 150,000 diapers monthly. Tickets are $12 at pre-sale and $20 at the door.  WKBN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In a plane crash near the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport on June 29, tests showed that co-pilot seat occupant Timothy Blake had alcohol, fentanyl, and norfentanyl in his blood—officials said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Early Tuesday, a cow wandered into the path of a van on North Man Street near Hibler Lane in Hubbard and crushed the vehicle's front, injuring the driver who was taken to a hospital in Sharon for minor treatment—troopers are trying to contact the animal's owner.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • An appeals court on Monday upheld the aggravated murder conviction of 27-year-old Hameed for fatally shooting 21-year-old Bradley at the now-closed Park Place 24 Tavern in Warren, rejecting his claims of ineffective counsel and a sudden fit of rage.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown Police investigated a robbery on Mahoning Avenue on Monday evening after a man was beaten near the WRTA bus station, and he said he only had his phone and a black computer bag with a jar of Vaseline—detectives are also examining a nearby shooting robbery on North Evanston Avenue.  WFMJ
  • A 19-year-old man was arrested on a swatting charge after calling 911 on Aug. 18 about teens with guns at the Boardman Sheetz, but police said no weapons were present and he is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 2.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a recent festival volunteer dinner, the Simply Slavic committee announced its 2025 scholarship winners. Two YSU students—Lucas Mazur, an Applied Science in Information Technology major from Poland, and Daniel Gray, a Financial Management major from McDonald—received $1,000 grants from a partnership with Warren’s Modern Methods Brewing Co.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Photo-enforced speed cameras in Youngstown school zones are active again for the 2025-2026 school year after the police restarted the program on August 26 & the cameras now enforce a 20 mph limit at 21 schools with fines ranging from $100 to $150.  WFMJ
