- ➤ Canfield Fair organizers said the 179th fair drew a large crowd with activities including the Junior Fair Market Beef Fitting at 8 a.m. and Market Livestock Sales at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.—the demolition derby took place Friday night at 8 p.m., with admission costing $10 for adults, $5 for children and $6 for seniors. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The NTSB released its final report on the Realty Tower explosion on May 28 which showed that a scrap-removal crew cut into an active gas line that was wrongly marked as dead—this mislabeling by Dominion Energy and a slow evacuation at Chase Bank led to one death, several injuries and $42 million in damage. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 19-year-old man, Semaj Barlow McElvaine, was indicted Thursday for felonious assault after he punched a man on July 12 at the downtown bus station on West Federal Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard—police said the victim had a swollen jaw and was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. - ➤ A Youngstown man pleaded guilty on Thursday for forcing six women into prostitution—he reached a plea deal that avoids a lengthy trial. WFMJ
- ➤ A Youngstown man—36-year-old Larry Burgess—pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of corrupting another with drugs, compelling prostitution and trafficking in cocaine after allegedly coercing seven women; he faces sentencing on Sept. 16. WKBN
- ➤ The Supreme Court has docketed the appeal of Claudia Hoerig, who is in prison for killing her husband in Newton Falls in 2007, as she argues her sudden passion defense should lead to a new trial or acquittal — her case awaits support from at least four of the nine justices. Hoerig remains in the Dayton Correction Institution and her legal team points to trial errors and issues with her extradition as reasons for her appeal. WFMJ

- ➤ A survey of Youngstown police officers showed low morale and concerns over poor pay and weak city council support—repeat entries skewed the results. City officials said they will review the feedback to fix issues and help retain officers. The Vindicator
