COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Organizers in Youngstown are preparing a free veterans event called Saluting Our Heroes Veterans Appreciation Lunch at Glenwood Grounds—500 veterans will be fed on September 13 from 1—4 p.m. Volunteers are helping with the event as Chick-fil-A feeds helpers and local churches donate chairs and tables.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court docketed Claudia Hoerig’s appeal of her 2007 murder conviction in Newton Falls—she claims lower courts ignored her sudden passion plea after domestic abuse and the Court will rule by January if her appeal merits review.  WKBN
  • On Sunday, 29-year-old inmate Isiaha Waulk stabbed two others at Northeast Ohio Correctional Center then was attacked by four inmates and later died at St. Elizabeth Health Center—detectives and prison staff with the U.S. Marshals Service are investigating the incident.  WKBN
  • An inmate was stabbed inside Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown—he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on Sunday.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown has been ordered to pay a $739,500 penalty for missing deadlines on a $240 million sewer improvement project that aimed to stop raw sewage from flowing into local waterways—city officials have 30 days to pay the fine, which will be split between the U.S. and Ohio. It remains to be determined if the city will appeal the ruling.  WFMJ
  • Nine candidates asked the Mahoning County Board of Elections to review earlier rejections, and three candidates—Tina Cvetkovich, Million Perry-Phifer and Tonya Dean—earned spots on the Nov. 4 ballot by providing extra valid signatures. Other appeals were denied for errors like missing dates and incorrect petition details.  The Vindicator
  • The Western Reserve Transit Authority is set to bid on a $5 million project to build a new bus garage that will house and charge 20 electric buses efficiently. The facility will break ground in late fall and finish construction by the end of next year—ensuring it is ready for the eight buses already on order.  WKBN
