COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Youngstown has unveiled its Downtown Events Calendar for September that lists cultural programs, family entertainment and community activities. Highlights include First Friday Downtown—focused on Youngstown's history—and live music at the Doubletree tonight, with additional events like line dancing, science programs and a family Oktoberfest scheduled later in the month.  WKBN
  • The 138th annual Columbiana Street Fair opens today at 5 p.m. at 1 South Main Street and will run through Saturday with rides, games and food. Organized by Benjamin Firestone Post 290, the fair will feature a parade at 6:30 p.m. at the Firestone Park pool entrance — and it has long been known to attract up to 40,000 fans.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to a 9 a.m. call at a shopping plaza on Canfield Road in Cornersburg and found a car with front-end damage behind a crossover SUV that drove through the post office lobby—both vehicles were towed and the driver was taken home by a relative.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • Rayshawn D. Hall, 24, was sentenced to 23 years in federal prison by a Cleveland judge after pleading guilty to eight drug charges, including fentanyl and methamphetamine distribution—agents linked his case to nearly $57,000 in cash found at a Youngstown address.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • JAC Live announced that The Band Perry and country singer-songwriter Chase McDaniel will open for headliner Tim McGraw at YLive’s second night on Saturday, Sept. 27—The award-winning trio will return from hiatus with their hit 'If I Die Young' while McDaniel will continue his underdog rise with songs like 'Project'.  WKBN

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Powerball ticket bought at Sheetz in Canfield won $1 million by matching the white ball numbers in Wednesday night's drawing—though it did not pick the red ball, officials said. Other million-dollar tickets were sold in Ohio and Pennsylvania ahead of Saturday's drawing for a $1.7 billion jackpot.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown got federal approval to reduce the scope of its wastewater improvement project — the city will lower the facility by 20 million gallons a day and save about $54 million in capital costs after nearly 18 months of negotiations. Design work will start in January 2026, construction will begin in 2028, and work is expected to finish by Oct. 1, 2035.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mahoning County officials noted that while suicides have declined so far this year, the need for a secure mental health facility remains urgent—officials said the state must help build a locked center where police can drop off individuals in crisis rather than sending them to jail.  WKBN

  • The Poland girls soccer team beat Struthers 9-0 at Dave Pavlansky Field on Thursday night. Coach Neil Huda said the team needed to fix weak areas before the season's second half — the Bulldogs will travel to Lakeview on Monday.  Tribune Chronicle
