- ➤ Last Friday was National Food Bank Day when local food banks raised awareness of food insecurity and honored volunteers. Local soup kitchens and food drives are calling for help during Hunger Action Month—volunteers can spread the word on social media and donate to local pantries. WFMJ
- ➤ GM Cares, with Ultium Cells and Spitzer Chevrolet, launched a fundraiser to raise $50,000 to buy a 2025 Chevy Express van for Inspiring Minds and will match donations up to $25,000 — the campaign runs from Sept. 1st to Oct. 15th and the nonprofit plans to use the van for local youth transportation with delivery scheduled by early next year. - ➤ Youngstown police recorded eight homicides in the first eight months of this year compared to 17 during the same period last year and 11 over the past 12 months—a 56% decrease from the previous period—with Lt. - ➤ Four World War II veterans aged 99 to 105 attended the 18th Patriot Day at Quaker Steak & Lube in Austintown on Thursday—each receiving a plaque to honor their service while over 260 veterans were celebrated overall. - ➤ Youngstown started a Downtown Ambassador program to help with litter cleanup, maintenance, directions, and parking in downtown. The small team will work part time in navy blue uniforms that have yet to arrive and is managed by Economic Action Group under a $150,000 contract—boosting safety without replacing the police. WFMJ
- ➤ ODOT reported that the four-way stop at the intersection of State Route 45 and State Route 165 in Greenford has reduced injury crashes by nearly 90% in the past five years—overall crashes down nearly 70% from an average of four per year before installation in 2015. - ➤ Bon Secours Mercy Health, Warren City, and a detective filed responses to an amended complaint that adds two more St. Joseph Warren Hospital employees as defendants in a lawsuit by former patient Brittany Watts, who claims that staff falsely told police her fetus could be alive after her miscarriage—while the hospital says Watts left against medical advice.
