COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Iron and Steel Train Show took place yesterday at the Assumption Social Center in Youngstown and featured model trains with displays from 40 vendors to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital. Proceeds will fund a Willy Wonka train set donation (honoring organizer Dennis Mamone’s late wife).  WKBN
  • Stanley and Barbara Schwartz celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary by returning to the Mahoning Valley to volunteer at Liberty Local Schools—where nearly 70 family members helped mulch, plant trees, build shelves, and read to students. They also had a tree planted with a commemorative plaque to mark their lasting legacy in a day of service.  The Vindicator

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 62-year-old man working in a culvert was struck in Liberty Township on Friday at 9 a.m. by a 27-year-old driver allegedly impaired with a suspended license—he was flown to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown for treatment.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • A 22-year-old woman was shot and found dead in her apartment on the 2600 block of Tyrell Avenue in the Northwest part of the city early Saturday—her live-in partner, 22-year-old Devyonna L. Taylor, was charged with murder and taken to jail as police investigated the scene at Valley View Estates, marking the city's ninth homicide this year.  The Vindicator
  • Police responded to a shooting on Youngstown's West Side and found one person fatally wounded.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Youngstown State defeated Robert Morris 56—17 on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium as Beau Brungard ran for 264 yards and four touchdowns to break a conference record; the Penguins now prepare to travel to East Lansing to meet Michigan State on Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m.  Tribune Chronicle
  • In Friday's game, the Warren G. Harding Raiders scored three touchdowns in the final 2:37 but still lost 25-15 to Massillon Perry—Perry controlled the ball and pushed Harding into poor field positions. Harding coach Matt Richardson said the late rally was not enough to overcome an 18-point deficit from the first half.  Tribune Chronicle
