COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The sixth annual Boomers & Beyond Senior Expo is scheduled for Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MetroPlex Expo Center at 1620 Motor Inn Drive in Liberty—this free event, sponsored by The Vindicator and Tribune Chronicle, will bring more than 30 vendors offering senior services, health screenings, and door prizes.  Tribune Chronicle
  • On Saturday morning, about 50 volunteers gathered at Stambaugh Park in Girard for World Cleanup Day as Youngstown CityScape and 422 United led the cleanup—volunteers worked across several zones before regrouping for lunch at a local restaurant. The event connected Girard and Youngstown as local groups and businesses joined forces.  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic radio station WKTL celebrated its 60th anniversary this past weekend with a pregame reunion of former student staff at Laddie J. Fedor Field and a tour plus reception hosted by the Struthers Rotary at Mauthe Park — the station first broadcast on Sept. 13th, 1965 and has played a key role in student broadcasting and local culture.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown State University President Bill Johnson will address faculty and staff today at 10 a.m. in Williamson Hall Auditorium—highlighting a 2.1% fall headcount increase and record degree completion amid consecutive enrollment gains.  WFMJ
  • Motivational speaker Willie Spears visited Chaney Middle School yesterday—he spoke on respect and positive behavior—and he will visit East Middle School and a school in Sharpsville later this week to share his message. This visit aims to guide students on making good life choices.  WKBN
  • Youngstown State University hosted the Stratasys Truck Tour Experience yesterday to show students how 3D printing builds items for medicine, manufacturing, and design—experts explained how digital files become physical objects layer by layer. The traveling event, coordinated with America Makes, stopped at several campuses to boost knowledge of additive printing.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office received over $135,000 in grants today to reduce crashes and save lives. The funds include $55,000 from Safe Communities and $80,720 from Federal Traffic Safety grants — used for high-visibility enforcement and extra overtime to target speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Giovanni Vitello, a 2-year-old from Cortland, underwent laser brain surgery at Texas Children’s Hospital — his treatment stopped daily seizures from tuberous sclerosis complex. Since his Dec. 6, 2024 surgery, he has been in therapy to relearn skills, with doctors reducing his medication as he makes progress.  WFMJ
  • On Demand Occupational Medicine is hosting its first annual NEO Safety Expo at the Holiday Inn in Boardman on Thursday, September 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.—attendees will learn 20 key workplace safety topics, earn external safety training credit, and enter raffles for prizes.  WKBN

SPORTS NEWS

  • YSU announced it will require metal detectors at all high school football games held at the university—starting with the Mooney—Boardman game on Friday. A YSU spokesperson confirmed the new rule.  WFMJ
  • Ursuline football players are asking a Mahoning County Court judge to let them transfer to another school after the Ohio High School Athletic Association ruled they are ineligible to play because the season was canceled amid legal issues. Attorneys for the six players argue the ruling is unfair and said it limits their chance to continue playing football—claiming the athletes did nothing wrong.  WKBN
