- ➤ Struthers City Council will hold a Build A Bed Day on October 4 at 8 a.m. on Elm Street behind City Hall - Street Department Garage to build beds for children in need; volunteers and donations are needed and interested residents may call Councilwoman Megan Pingley at 330-503-7822 or Brandy Eisenbraun at 330-402-0101. - ➤ The Mahoning Valley Freedom Fighters held a town hall meeting yesterday at the Unitarian Universalist Church—inviting Representative Rulli, two congressional candidates and a mayoral candidate—to let the community ask questions about gerrymandering and local representation. WKBN
- ➤ United Way of Youngstown opened a new Care Closet at Niles Intermediate School where students can obtain free clothing, hygiene items, household products and food—sponsored by Dinesol Plastics. The location is part of a program started in 2022 that now has 27 sites in 10 districts. WKBN
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ An artificial intelligence research company and its partners said they plan to build five new data centers next year, with one in Lordstown (a former GM plant) as part of a $500 billion national project called Stargate. The new facilities will boost computer power to help advance AI work. WFMJ
- ➤ Lordstown was chosen as one of five new artificial intelligence data centers in the United States as part of the $500 billion, four-year Stargate project — OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced it in an online news release. Japan-based SoftBank broke ground at the former GM auto assembly plant and expects the center to be ready next year. The Vindicator
- ➤ Curaleaf opened its new cannabis dispensary in Girard on Wednesday afternoon at the former Family Video building on North State Street. The store serves both medical cardholders and adults over 21 and is open 9 a.m.—8 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.—7 p.m. on Sundays, with local residents already showing strong support. WFMJ
- ➤ Professional Engine & Generator Systems in Canfield is hiring a plumber to install generators and make fuel hookups—candidates must have five years of plumbing experience and a clean driving record. The job offers above-average pay with benefits like healthcare and paid vacation—applications are accepted in person or online. WKBN
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ An announcement is expected Tuesday, September 30 from DeYor Performing Arts Center, JAC Management Group, Stambaugh Auditorium and Youngstown Symphony Orchestra to reveal plans for the future after reports of stalled contract talks raised concerns over the orchestra's next season. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Poland Township was ranked the fifth safest community in Ohio by Travel Safe Insurance based on very low property and violent crime rates. Police chief Greg Wilson said strong community + local government support and proactive policing helped earn the ranking. The Vindicator
- ➤ Aqua will start a $3 million project in Struthers and Poland that replaces nearly 9,000 feet of old water mains, adds new hydrants, valves and service lines, and replaces lead lines for over 170 homes at no cost. The work will take seven months and is part of the company’s $12 million investment in our area—improving our water system. WKBN
- ➤ The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio filed a court motion to appoint a receiver for SOBE Thermal Energy Systems—whose mobile steam plant supplies heat, cooling and hot water to 27 downtown buildings—as fears grow that the equipment could be repossessed as soon as Tuesday. The move comes after SOBE breached its lease and faced lawsuits for nonpayment, leaving essential utility service in doubt. The Vindicator
- ➤ Local government officials in Bristol, Champion, Southington and Weathersfield held meetings in September where township trustees and school boards reviewed plans to expand a cemetery, clean up a former firebrick site, ban golf carts, update school programs, and plan events like trick-or-treat and tree lighting — they approved bids, hired new staff, and set dates while addressing safety and property issues.
